I don't believe anyone can do a cover quite like Joe Cocker can. His performance of "With a Little Help From My Friends" at Woodstock is still one of my top ten favorites. Though he doesn't surpass that here he is in rare form. If you like Joe then this CD is for you. Beautiful.

The cover of "Just Me" contains a picture of Keith Sweat with a suit on, staring into the camera with a serious look on his face. This album cover gives listeners a clue as to what kind of tone the album has. This album has a very relaxed and mature tone to it. I have heard a great deal of Keith Sweat's music on the radio, but I never listened to any of his LPs. If his past work is as pleasing as "Just Me", I have no problem taking a listen to it. I enjoyed every song on this album. Sweat is known for "whining", but his whining on this album is very minimum. He is doing much more crooning than begging this time around.
Most of the tracks found here are ballads. There are a few mid-tempo cuts, but there is nothing really ... Read More:

Hil St. Soul is back with an amazing effort, blending smooth jazz, r&b, acid jazz, hip hop and funk with a breezy but powerful voice that compliments the great music and songwriting perfectly. I love all of her albums, and this one does not disappoint. It's unfortunate that an artist of her talent isn't a mega star here in the US, but when you look and listen to what people consider good in this country I can see why. Don't ever sell out, Hillary, you are incredible!

The last time I had occasion to mention the late Bo Diddley in this space was in connection with a series of interviews and performances along with Chuck Berry, Little Richard and others in Keith Richards Chuck Berry tribute film Hail, Hail Rock and Roll. The talk centered, rightly, on the dismal fate of many black recording artists who developed what would become Rock and Roll when the white artists like Elvis took it over and reaped the benefits of a mass audience. Well, those interviews occurred a while ago, back in the 1980's, but Bo's sense of not having been properly recognized I believe remained until his death. Yet, when one thinks of the sounds created by the founders of Rock and Roll can anyone deny that Bo's primal beat was not central to ... Read More:

This is a first rate CD by Marcia--admittedly my fave contemporary artist. If "Where Do You Go" dosen't move you emotionally you must be dead! Marcia is the most soulful voice I have ever heard in decades of music listening--and that's the idea--in a now world of cookie cutter singers and musicians Marcia Ball is a unique expressive vibrant talent-I have played her CD's for years for people and have dragged them to see Marcia in person and I never have a negative response! why Marcia isn't even more well known has always been beyond me--

McDonald paves no new ground with this release. Voice is still strong, but the songs are mediocre at best and the arrangements are just that, mediocre. Hope he can move on in his career.

At least there are two really good songs on this disc...'Feedback' and 'Rock Wich U.' That is more than her last few discs offered up (i.e. 20Y.O. = Enjoy and Damita Jo = All Nite). Yes, those tired interludes and wispy-voiced songs are still there. I was going to buy tickets to her concert today but then figured it would be same old show (inflatable-storybook set, dry humping a male audience member, crying on a stool, etc..) Janet really needs to learn some new tricks.
