Took a while for me to order these. Wasn't sure I'd be getting authentic performances. But, from the start, I was mesmerized. Memphis Slim and Sonny Boy Williamson? Somebody smiling on me. This is a real treat. And if you don't have your copy, shame on you.

I've been on a big time big band kick of late, so after I got done pulling out (and putting back) a bunch of my Duke Ellington stuff, I bought some things new to my collection, including Thad Jones' Consummation and this highly recommended (by The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings: Eighth Edition (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings)) work. After a couple of days with Consummation, and loving it to death, I realized that I hadn't yet given my Atomic Basie a listen and that Thad was with Count at the time of the Atomic recording, so I was curious to see if I would find the roots of Jones on this CD. I'm not exactly sure I found the roots of Jones. I think I might have found the whole tree. In big band annals, this recording has to be in the top three. It has ... Read More:

After "Lie To Me", I thought I would buy anything this artist put out. 3 albums later, I'm regretting that decision. It started with this title. Did that trip to Memphis make him think he's Al Green? Did his guitar fall down and it can't get up? Is he only a 6 string stud in the studio with a lot of help from the engineers and timed tracking? I honestly don't get it. As utterly IMPRESSIVE and AMAZING as "Lie" was, subsequent releases have only put me to sleep. Forced blue-eyed soul ain't doing it for me. Stax/Volt is out of business and the Staple Singers aren't holding auditions. I don't want to be unkind because anyone who can cut the very best version of "Matchbox" will always have a home in my heart but in the words of the immortal Frank Zappa, "Shut Up and Play ... Every song is perfectly remixed with an ambiance of House, Down Tempo, Trip Hop, Funk, and Acid Jazz. If you want to hear Billie Holiday in her natural style then buy the original Billie CD's but if you love remixes that take the past and make it a blast for todays generation, this is it!!! The flow of the CD never misses a beat. Each song is perfect in its remix style. This is much better then the Nina remix because it's smoother and the producers really meshed Billie Holidays vocals and original music to the new remix style they intended. Once again, if your looking for original Billie this is not the CD for you but if you want original Billie with a bit of Cayenne Pepper this is it!!!!

This is the second Curtis Salgado disc I have bought because folks that have seen him just raved about how good he is. He must be one of those love um or hate um type artists. After repeated listens no bright spots appeared anywhere on this CD to catch my interest. My advice, listen first then buy if he hits a cord with you.

Along with Earl Hooker's "The Moon Is Rising", this album is a Chicago Blues masterpiece. Though the lead singer and harmonica player is white, his singing is more than credible and his harmonica playing is excellent. Guitarist Michael Bloomfield plays some incendiary lead guitar, and was taken from us much too early. His death is a tragedy in the truest sense of the world. I recently viewed a video of him at one of the many folk festivals during the 1960s, perhaps Newport, talking about how his father is rich, his family is Jewish, he had a Bar Mitzvah, and how he'll never be able to play or sing like Son House. His admiration for the great Son House was more than obvious. Recently, rock guitar magazines have started to talk more about Bloomfield and his wonderful talents, which is a great ... Read More:

Great work by the original line-up of the ABB...not quite as much "straight-ahead blues" as the first self-titled release. If you don't already have this or the band's first album, by all means purchase "Beginnings" which combines both works in one convenient 60-minute collection.

I'v been avoiding writing a review about these dvd's (American Folk & blues festival vol 1, Vol 2, vol 3,) for a while now, mainly because I get so emotional when I think about them. So I wont even try. But I will say this much....The ONLY place in the world where you can see the fabulous T-Bone Walker on dvd... is on these sets (he appears on all 3 volumes). And where else are you gonna see Lonnie Johnson, Shakey Horton, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, Willie Dixon, Otis Span, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Mama Thorton, A very young Buddy Guy, and a very young Hubert Sumlin, Big Joe Turner, Son House, Koko Tayler, Lightnin Hopkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Howlin Wolf, AND MANY MORE!!! YOU NEED TO HAVE ALL 3 VOLUMES FOR YOUR COLLECTION!
