Keep It Simple

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Keb' Mo'

Release Date February 10, 2004
Every song tells a story...and every instrument comes through beautifully in each song! Such clarity..the voices! This is now my mellow out CD. It encourages me (and will encourage you too) makes you smile and will humble you. Keep It Simple is a wonderful addition to any collector who likes down home classic blues music or just introduced to it like me! I must ask: KEB'MO PLEASE DO A INSTRUMENTAL VERSION OF THIS CD..I would love to have it in my collection too!
Thanks. A new fan...T.

Slow Down

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Keb' Mo'

Release Date August 25, 1998
Keb' Mo' came on the scene as a breath of fresh air for the blues. But, as his albums and output progress, it appears that he has elected to adopt a smooth, polished style that will turn-off many blues purists, who prefer the grit and pain of traditional blues. So, if you and yours are fans of Kenny G, Grover Washington Junior, Boney James, etc., then this stuff is for you. Oversimplified, safe, and at times quite boring. There are a handful of semi-precious gems on this album, including "I Was Wrong," "Henry," and "Rainmaker;" and the HDCD encoding allows for exception sound quality. Overall this is a nice, safe, happy, blues disc that lacks a certain something. But, if you need a present for Xmas, your mother would love to put this in ... Read More:

This recording is nice, but I like the album "Forever More" which has many of the same selections. Given a choice, I would take "Forever More".

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Muddy Waters

Release Date October 30, 2001
There are seminal moments in the arts when circumstances bring giants together in perfect alignment, and this album is one of them. The cast could never be better than the one contained herein, with the huge blues voice of Muddy Waters leading the way, half-brother Otis Spann pounding out some of his most brilliant piano ever, Paul Butterfield blowing his harp as if nations rise or fall by his effort, Mike Bloomfield (not long for this world after this 1969 recording) spinning out black blues guitar licks in a faithful but trailblazing fashion, plus a killer rhythm section of Stax/Volt's Donald "Duck" Dunn and Muddy's own Sam Lay on drums.

The songs are Muddy classics, from the thundering "40 Days And 40 Nights" to the braggadocio ... Read More:

Arc of a Diver

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Steve Winwood

Release Date August 31, 1990
Forget about all of the negative comments appearing here, this is one great collection of music! Of course it is keyboard heavy, but that's what Steve Winwood does best!

The title track is just incredible and "While You see a Chance," one of the most positive set of lyrics penned.

Although these two tracks are undoubtedly the standouts, "Dust", "Slowdown Sundown" and "Second Hand Woman" are also very strong.

If there is a weak track on this disc, it would have to be "Night Train", but even saying that is stretching things. In fact, its' very reminiscent of Warren Zevon's "Nighttime in the Switching Yard" and Bruce Cockburn's same titled track from his "The Charity of Night" release.

All in all, a solid ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Anthology Of American Folk Music (Edited By Harry Smith)

Anthology Of American Folk Music (Edited By Harry Smith)

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date August 19, 1997
There are some truly haunting performances here, and some funny ones, and some of everything, really. This stuff is so far deeper and weirder and spookier than any folk I've ever heard. It's the motherlode; Harry Smith wandered around and got these recordings before radio started, and thus we get true folk music, passed down the generations and from that area, or from the motherland of the musicians, with the spirit of the New World.
The vibes are palpable, varied, and intense. Lots of "mistakes", but so much feeling that missed notes only add to the experience.
If you've ever liked any folk music at all, whether Leadbelly, the Seegers, the Carter family, early Dylan, or if you need to know where real country music comes from, this is your collection. ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Black Snake Moan

Black Snake Moan

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
from: New West Records

Release Date January 30, 2007

This is a very good collection of blues, and Samuel L Jackson really does lend an amazing voice to the collection. Just like his acting style is his own, so is his way of singing. I'm honestly impressed by his voice and style.

The music is a nice blend of blues, rock, and almost ethereal, hynotic- spacey tunes.

Some tracks are better than others, and though I have my favorites, I didn't skip over a single track.

Is it the best blues CD ever? No. But for beginners and aficionados, it's a nice listen.

Samuel L Jackson fits in well, and his authentic (not seemingly trained just for the movie) voice made the CD worth buying, for me at least.
