Keith Jarrett is surely one of the more interesting jazz pianists around. I have his recording of the Shostakovitch 24 Prelude and Fugues and am full of admiration of his courage in straddling the divide between classical music and jazz. That recording is a superb account of one of the great classical piano compositions of the 20th century.
In this CD, we find Jarrett, recovering from a serious illness, in quiet, contemplative mood. This account of standards is almost minimalist. Jarrett presents the themes with little ornamentation and hardly adds much in the way of improvisation. Instead, he lets the tunes breath, enveloping them in quietness. The left hand adds few harmonies -- the mood is almost religious.

Romantic Warrior

Honestly, there are so many well-written and informative reviews already written here, there is little that I can add. But one of the many outstanding things about Romantic Warrior is how 'not dated' the music sounds...especially when you consider that this is jazz fusion from 1976. But in reality, this is much closer to prog-rock rather than jazz. If you are a fan of progressive rock or jam bands, than by all means, pick this up. The virtuosity of this all-star quartet is absolutely stunning. The song structures are challenging and imaginative. Bottom line...this is cerebral music that rocks!

The title track is likely to hit the listener with the force of Hera's heavenly ethers seducing Zeus. It's some of the most relaxed, unforced playing on record, the musicians all sharing an empathetic wave length in a kind of suspended telepathic or mystical state. Coming as the last tune of the recording session, the musicians were tired but primed, ready to create with the jitters long gone and with exclusive concentration on each other and the music. Less than "perform," they seem to be meditating out loud, or telling stories to one another in hushed tones so the children won't awaken. What do you get when you team one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Jazz music (or any musical genre for that matter) with perhaps the greatest trumpet player in Jazz history - pure magic! I can throw out all the cliche's and hyperbole in the world trying sway the rest of you out there who don't own this yet to purchase it immediately. However, what am I going to say that will trump all of the critics (both pros and Amazon ams alike) who give this recording five stars w/out hesitating a second after they listen to it the first time?

Aptly named, Maiden Voyage features tracks that are nearly ideal for beginning jazz improvisers. The chord changes are not overly quick, nor are the tempi on the tunes. Like most of the packages that Jamey Aebersold has put together over the years, Maiden Voyage works best for players of melodic instruments (flute, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, guitar, etc.). This is useful for guitarists and pianists who want to practice their comping, as it is for bass players. The only problem with using the basic version of any of Aebersold's book/CD packages for comping or working out bass lines is that there is no soloist to react to. Oscar Peterson Plays The George Gershwin Songbook

The 1st 12 songs were the ones actually released on the original album. A Foggy Day when Oscar hits the bridge (Middle Part) where he plays the melody so graciously almost angelic to a point with Ray Brown walking his distinct bass lines the song mezmorizes you. You'll keep playing it over and over. Many of the 1st 12 songs are like that. I believe the trio's interpretation of melody was at its zenith when it recorded this album. Can Jazz be a thing of beauty and grace? This album says so.

Evans is peerless when it comes to jazz ballads, to my ears, and here's a full album of his mellow mastery.
Moonbeams is perfect for those who love quiet, introspective music, and is superb background sound for dimming the lights and so on. It is also much more than that. Evans' genius is his inchoate ability to invest almost endless emotion in his work. All the listener need do is let the notes and harmonies flow in, and the spell is cast; there is deep feeling on this record, and many unique meloodic and harmonic choices. Re: Person I Know and Moonbeams are just two of the highlights from an album with no weak spots. Evans had a fine rhythm section here; Motian is a fabulous brush player, and Israels fills La Faro's sadly empty shoes more than credibly.
