... that so many people rate this album so highly. I don't like the format of the repeated alternate takes, and I don't like the constant background noise of clinking glasses, chatter, and so on. I guess it would make decent background music for a cocktail party and would probably be of great interest to fellow musicians who are interested in Evan's piano technique, but this is an album that I have had for years, and it hardly ever gets played--never, actually.

At the time that I bought it I was under the impression that this was a great, essential album, but I don't think it is.

Romantic Warrior

Honestly, there are so many well-written and informative reviews already written here, there is little that I can add. But one of the many outstanding things about Romantic Warrior is how 'not dated' the music sounds...especially when you consider that this is jazz fusion from 1976. But in reality, this is much closer to prog-rock rather than jazz. If you are a fan of progressive rock or jam bands, than by all means, pick this up. The virtuosity of this all-star quartet is absolutely stunning. The song structures are challenging and imaginative. Bottom line...this is cerebral music that rocks!

Metheny Mehldau Quartet

I had most of Pat Metheny's musical output. I did not have this and I did not have his very first CD "Pat Metheny Group." I ordered both CD's at the same time. I love the "Pat Metheny Group" CD and if you don't have it get it as it really is one of his best. This CD pales by comparison. The music is pleasant but goes nowhere. Pat Metheny in my mind is one of the few musicians whose music is evocative to me. I get chills even now thinking of some of his songs in my head. There is nothing evocative or memorable here. Great dinner music but it starts and stops there. There are a couple of songs that stand out (Towrds the Light in particulary) but much of it is infected by sameness. I am no fan of the Jim Hall collaberation for much of the same reasons. ... Read More:

Explorations

This was the first Evans/LaFaro/Motian trio album that I bought and it was a wise purchase. Almost every song on Explorations is outstanding. I wanted to buy something from this trio because I know that their influence on modern jazz trios is immeasureable.

The great thing about this album is that it actually features an "upbeat" Evans. Most of his work is know as introspective, but when Evans wanted to play at fast, upbeat tempos, he could very well. The Miles Davis tune "Nardis" is beautiful because Evans had a knack for playing chords that had a deep and rich tone. Lyrical and contemplative throughout, Explorations has a mix of somber and swinging solos.

Truly, Diana Krall cannot be compared with any other Jazz vocalist, past or present. And as a huge fan of Ella, Sarah, and Mel Torme - three of the best singers ever to hold a microphone - I must admit that Diana Krall doesn't even come close. Yet, she holds her own by subtly and beautifully carving out a niche for herself in the genre and subtly redefining Jazz as we know it. The difference? Her vocals. It's the phrasing, the honesty, the raw emotion that pours from every song. What do you get when you team one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Jazz music (or any musical genre for that matter) with perhaps the greatest trumpet player in Jazz history - pure magic! I can throw out all the cliche's and hyperbole in the world trying sway the rest of you out there who don't own this yet to purchase it immediately. However, what am I going to say that will trump all of the critics (both pros and Amazon ams alike) who give this recording five stars w/out hesitating a second after they listen to it the first time?
