Truly, Diana Krall cannot be compared with any other Jazz vocalist, past or present. And as a huge fan of Ella, Sarah, and Mel Torme - three of the best singers ever to hold a microphone - I must admit that Diana Krall doesn't even come close. Yet, she holds her own by subtly and beautifully carving out a niche for herself in the genre and subtly redefining Jazz as we know it. The difference? Her vocals. It's the phrasing, the honesty, the raw emotion that pours from every song. There's no scatting, no wild improvisations, just vocal purity and the ability to capture the lyrical meaning of a song and effortlessly express a myriad of sentiments. Just listen to the tracks LOST MIND and I MISS YOU SO. Can't we all relate? Perfectly delivered...Diana ... Read More:

A great artist in his exuberant, "Basieish" youth, Lester Young often proved that in his mature years he could add to the subtlety and feeling, without sacrifising any of the rhythmical power.
How could anyone ever have believed that his post WW-II years were a throwaway alltogether?
Here, propelled by Peterson's fine group, The Pres swings hard, starting with the mighty "Ad Lib Blues" but in the very next song, beautiful ballad "I Can't Get Started", shows the greatest strength of his playing on this CD. The name of the game is emotion, reached through mellodic innovativeness and rhythmical subtlety.
Interestingly enough, in the company of a more emotional Teddy Wilson on another masterpiece from the 50's (Pres and Teddy , Young ... Read More:

Well, I'm not going to be able to add much to the great reviews for GO! other than in my opinion, this was Gordon's best album. His playing is beautiful, passionate, his tone big and powerful, he's playing behind the beat (as always) and full of good humor -- I mean, the "Take me out to the ballgame" lick on "3 O'Clock in the Morning," and his takeoff from that line is almost worth the price of the CD in itself.
This is a recording that grows on you the more you play it. You get to appreciate the infinite subtlety of Gordon's playing the more you listen. He wasn't all that understated, it's just that he was just plain brilliant. GO! highlights that brilliance forever.
If you're new to jazz and the great tenormen, this side is one of those ... Read More:

When the first song started to play, I got up from my chair and began to dance - I kept it up for at least 5 more songs until I was exhausted! The first several sets are songs from the 50s then it shifts to the 40s and then the music goes somewhere else! OMG! This CD is fabulous. I sang in a jazz trio in the past, so I sang along to the songs while I danced. I had to play a Beethoven Symphony when then the CD ended in order to just chill-out!

Recognized for years as a Jazz Classic, an Essential Recording . . . there is very little regarding this special recording that can be added that has not already been written. The qualities of these two great artists came together on this very special recording. It is simply that good. The technology through the years has improved and fortunately the remastering of this classic has been done well enough to give much deserved honor to the original vinyl rendering.
Hartman voice sounds as if he were in your room, while John Coltrane simplifies his music to support the "other instrument", the vocal (his only recording to do so). It takes genius and great self esteem to keep it within the boundaries of the entire ensemble; Coltrane did just this on this recording ... Read More:

This album is a must for any jazz collection. The live performance is amazing. These two performers and the side men produce a sound that has that groove that stays with you. I had the vinyl of this for many years and it is nice to get a CD of it that still has that sound (without the warmth of hiss and scratches).

Hiromi's Sonicbloom performed last May 3rd, during Rota dos Bons Ventos Festival at Faial isl., Azores. Along with some musics from her previous CDs, like Time Control, a few tracks from Beyond Standard were played, among them Caravan, etc. Then I just had to wait for June 10th to order my copy of this really fantastic cd. On stage Hiromi sometimes looks like a Kung-Fu fighter in bursts of energy that often end up on a delicate note. Her band doesn't deceive the genious piano player, nor the audience. Standards are standards, but they have been played, and will be, in many different ways and this is a very special one. Really suggested to music lovers and if Hiromi is in town, don't miss the show.

...from a purely musical standpoint, as in being actual compositions, it's not that great of a listen. Giant Steps, for the most part, is an album for people who understand music, those who know about music theory and understand what new breakthroughs this guy made with this album, and how he uses the numerous things. And for those people, they would probably know if Coltrane's Giant Steps is worth listening to for the musical technique and the like involved
But for me, Giant Steps shows some hints of brilliance, and John Coltrane still can play the heck out of his saxophone, he's brilliant obviously, on the whole. But the problem is that for all of the brilliant hints (the melodies he usually plays at the beginning and end of the songs are worth hearing), it suffers ... Read More:
