I originally purchased this album in 1964. It was one of my favorites then and it still is. Silver's hard charging jazz is a benchmark piece for this period. Excellent solo work by Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook are excellent.
I feel that this is a "must have" album for fans of jazz in the 50's and 60's.

The first of four wonderful albums Hank made in 60-61 with pianist Wynton Kelly and Mr PC Paul Chambers on bass, and either Philly Joe or Art Blakey on drums. Soul Station is a quartet including Art Blakey. Hank really came into his own for this set. It is highly accessable yet never boring with four originals bookended by two well chosen covers. The music swings and grooves with the feeling 4 greats in their prime, in communion with each other and making it sound easy. There are so many great RVG releases out now and this is top shelf. Hanks solos are sweet both in that round, unique, one-of-a-kind tone and the way they flow. He was great before and after Soul Station, but this is sublime. Very recommended.

The CD's I purchase although appearing brand new and packaged as such both skipped, repeating a portion of the track over and over.
I suppose this may happen but I have not experienced this it all my other purchases of music.
As to the content on other tracks; interesting interpretation of the great Cole Porter.

While it is undeniable that the catchy theme of "St. Thomas" has made Saxophone Colossus the most beloved work of Sonny Rollins, the album fairly showcases his improvisational genius. As heard on "St. Thomas," Rollins typically begins with cautions and then gradually develops into lyric lines. After the other musicians' solos, Rollins comes back with furious fast phrases before returning to the theme. Among the band members, drummer Max Roach is phenomenal, playing aggressive ad-libs while keeping the beat (especially on "Blue 7"). His interplays with Rollins are also thrilling (especially on "Strode Rode"). The variety of tunes, from calypso to Kurt Weill cover to authentic blues, shows Rollins's broad range of interests. Overall, Saxophone Colossus has ... Read More:

as i sit here listening to this recording on a saturday morning (on headphones) i'm taken back to memories of pat's tour for this project . this is an opinion of the disc without the additional material . i saw the concert(s) in both orlando and tampa . pat was truly blessed to have both GIL GOLDSTIEN and JIM BEARD on pianos , keybords and various other instruments . if memory serves , group stalwart STEVE RODBY was on electric and acoustic basses . THIS WAS THE WAY TO SEE AND HEAR this tremendously ambitious recording . PAT has given us all such an embarrassment of compositional and performance riches , that it really comes down to preferances . if you're fairly new to pat , you'll probably feel this is the greatest thing since sliced bread . those of us ... A great artist in his exuberant, "Basieish" youth, Lester Young often proved that in his mature years he could add to the subtlety and feeling, without sacrifising any of the rhythmical power.
How could anyone ever have believed that his post WW-II years were a throwaway alltogether?
Here, propelled by Peterson's fine group, The Pres swings hard, starting with the mighty "Ad Lib Blues" but in the very next song, beautiful ballad "I Can't Get Started", shows the greatest strength of his playing on this CD. The name of the game is emotion, reached through mellodic innovativeness and rhythmical subtlety.
Interestingly enough, in the company of a more emotional Teddy Wilson on another masterpiece from the 50's (Pres and Teddy , Young ... Read More:

With this album and A Love Supreme I travel from one ecstatic experience to the next in Coltrane Land. The commentaries already posted pretty much cover the particulars.

Since its initial release in 1973, Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" album has become a fusion jazz classic and rightfully so. Much like his former boss Miles Davis as well as R&B artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock set out to make music that was innovative for its time and pushed the envelope of creativity. Although Herbie had been experimenting with fusing rock, funk and African rhythms with Jazz styles in previous albums like "Sextant" and with his former group Mwandishi, "Head Hunters" is where all the musical styles and experimentation fell together in all the right places.
At least two of the four tracks on the album have gone on to become timeless classics. The nearly 16-minute centerpiece "Chameleon" is probably one of Herbie's best known ... Read More:

What do you get when you team one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Jazz music (or any musical genre for that matter) with perhaps the greatest trumpet player in Jazz history - pure magic! I can throw out all the cliche's and hyperbole in the world trying sway the rest of you out there who don't own this yet to purchase it immediately.
