Anyone who has an interest in the history of jazz piano should get this album or albums (Vol 1 & 2). Bud Powell was the first modern jazz pianist to lay the groundwork for succeeding players like Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea who memorized practically all of Bud's solos & Kenny Barron. Don't let the primitive recording quality on these sides deter you from enjoying this superb music--it is timeless. Also it is quite interesting to hear a 19 yr old Sonny Rollins with Bud and a young Roy Haynes on drums!!

Clifford Jordan, Eric Dolphy, Johnny Coles, Jaki Byard, and of course, the powerhouse team of Mingus and Richmond. In short, this was one of the great Mingus bands. It was also sadly, short-lived with the departure of Eric Dolphy, who died not long after, then the hospitalization of the Johnny Coles (shamelessly under-recorded) and not long after, the departure of Clifford Jordan.
While this is an outstanding two disc set, I still prefer the Legendary Paris Concerts recorded just one month later.
Having said that, I should add that this is an outstanding album, capturing one of the best bands Mingus ever put together.
To those who don't know of Mingus, this record is a good starting point.

Of all the Miles Davis albums I've heard thus far, this one has quickly become a favorite. The album is made up of two sessions from April of 1954, one on the 29th which produced "Walkin'" and "Blue 'N' Boogie", which features Davis on trumpet, the amazing J.J. Johnson on trombone, Lucky Thompson on tenor sax, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. An earlier session on the 3rd produced the remaining tracks on the album, with Dave Schildkraut on alto sax and without the presence of Johnson and Thompson.
"Walkin'" and "Blue 'N' Boogie" are both great extended hard bop numbers, boasting fine soloing from all the horn players. Davis sounds full and rich on these tracks and Lucky Thompson provides some soulful tenor, ... Read More:

I feel the assessment by "A Customer"is a bit harsh, but hits at least one nail on the head, and I compliment him for not simply flattering these fine musicians. My experience of this album from day one - and I ENJOY it - is that it is cruder, less attunement in evidence than on Five Years Later and both guys' later music. Abercrombie's playing has seemed to evolve from a certain noodling quality, like a bright person who talks too loud, mixes up his grammar and never finishes a sentence, to a really articulate and impressionistic maturity most evident on the latest quartet album. Towner, too, has evolved, but has always been a classically disciplined and articulate player, however, spontaneous. This is a vital and enjoyable album, for me, in spite and maybe also ... My favorite, ("Verse" being second). Her voice, composing. piano all in top form on every piece. Wins you over the first time through. I own and listen to most of her cds and this one is powerful and accessible all the way through.

I have had this CD for a couple of years now, and it is still as fresh as ever. I listen to it frequently, and it has opened up a new appreciation of jazz for me. I have given copies of it to people I love, which is not something I usually do. This CD, contrary to Mr Crabb's view, is richly developed. Each song takes you on a full and satisfying journey, some working you up almost to a frenzy with fascinatingly complex interplays between the instruments. There are some very complex rhythms, and phenomenal solos on piano and bass. This music, as others have said, has that indescribable stuff of greatness and is one of my permanent favorites, like certain classical CDs that I never tire of. I would give it a ten if I could.

Bill Frisell, for those who don't know, is a guitarist whose music is hard to pin down or categorize. One minute he's playing jazz, then the next he's playing country. You will find his music in your local music store's jazz section and if they don't know who Bill Frisell is, then I don't know if that person deserves to be working in a music store, because Mr. Frisell is one of the most original guitarist of the past 20 years. He got his start playing on ECM records in the mid to late 70s and has since then had a rollercoaster ride of a musical career. Not that this is going to mean anything, but he won a Grammy this year for the album "Unspeakable." His first Grammy award (it's about time the masses and the music buying public take notice). He is a graduate of the University of Colorado and ... Read More:

Eric Dolphy was one of those rare musicians for he could straddle between the avant-garde jazz world and that of classical music--not even Wynton Marsalis can claim that virtue since he has outrightly put down the avant garde in print. If you're undecided about this form of jazz then do check out this album. This was one of Dolphy's last recorded U.S. effort and it's a stunner (you wonder how backward Downbeat was when they gave this a less than stellar rating). Backed by familiar co-horts such as Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson and Richard Davis, the virtuoso Dolphy demonstrates his excellence with his own tunes like the Monk-dedicated, "Hat & Beard" to a tribute to a fellow flautist, "Gazzeloni". And let's not forget the great late Tony Williams on drums--the success of this album ... Read More:
