I have been an RTF fan for more than 30 years. I first heard them when I was in a rock band in high school-I was about 17 at the time; other band members more music savvy than I was turned me on to them, and I remain an admirer of their music to this day. RTF really is/was a jazz rock fusion supergroup. Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, Al DiMeola, and Lenny White are each terrific musicians in their own right, and the years that have passed since the definitive RTF lineup broke up in 1976 have borne that out. Each member has produced excellent work in a variety of forms (Clarke, for example, has carved a niche for himself doing movie and tv scores in addition to his solo albums).

Pianist Horace Parlan isn't really repetitious, in the context of the Charismatic Church (Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting). He's "tarrying", saying "thank you Jesus" or the like over and over to invoke the Holy Spirit, or while getting the Spirit. IMO. North/South Convergence

Why did I purchase this? Well, I'd finally managed to get my head around Coltrane's "Mediations" and learned to love it. I happened to pick up a used disc by Alice Coltrane "Journey in Satchimandana". Both of these works feature Mr. Sanders. I got curious and discovered his web site. If you haven't been there you should stop in there soon! The "Tunnel" video is wonderful! So anyway, I picked this up along with "Jewels of Thought".
Both releases are almost 100% wonderful but I do have one thing that bothers me. Leon Thomas' singing is good, he's a good vocalist. There is nothing at all wrong with his bizarre "yodeling" affect... But... it is over used to the point of distraction in my opinion. It really catches the new listener off guard, and ... Read More:

I love this CD, especially tracks 3 and 4 (which flow from one to another live). Track 4, "That's called The Sticks, ladies and gentlemen, The Sticks, thank you.", has the coolest solo hand-off ever. The trumpet wraps his solo up with some double-tonguing that is truly amazing... until the saxophone picks up right there with even faster. Wow.

This is still experimental Jazz fusion, but something about adding Scofield to the mix tames MMW. This is not a bad thing, in fact it is brillant! This is a cd that I will listen to again and again and highly reccomend. It has mellow ballads and chops that make you want to dance, another brillant masterpiece that will have staying power.

When this came out in the 70s, I bought a used vinyl copy and played it to death. Jarrett sounded so great--and who the heck was the trumpet player? Since, I've learned who Kenny Wheeler is. Oh, yes. As an inveterate fan of these two great artists, I can't say that either has ever made a better album. And that's saying--well, everything. It's beauty, passion, swing, a kaleidoscope of emotions and an emormous underlying tranquility as large as the ultimate oceanic truth played here. Yes, it has stood the test of time--imitated by legions, but still worthy of being played over and again.

I have become a huge fan of Metheny but I can't honestly say that
there are any albums he's done where I like every song. For me , Pat
has been brilliant at times (over the top brilliant) but this is the
only CD I have that I like every song. It is less experimental from an
instrumentation viewpoint but extremely experimental from a classical
instrumental approach -- which backs up my opinion of his artistic
and technical supremacy. Think I'm too keen? Listen to it about 10
times and it still sounds brilliant.
