I really like Enigmatic Ocean. The violin jams are scorching hot, and absolutely exciting. The album feels like a mid 70's Jeff Beck album in terms of sound and style (of course Beck focuses on the guitar, not the violin- must be the production of the album that sounds the same). Can't pick a favorite song when every single moment of Enigmatic Ocean features lots of energy, beauty and challenging violin and guitar playing. It's quite an album.
This is one of those rare cases where EVERYTHING comes together and feels so right. I found myself playing certain songs over and over just so I can remember them. It was a pleasure to do so, because every time you hear these songs, you remember a little bit more each time. Interesting ... Read More:

Anyone who has an interest in the history of jazz piano should get this album or albums (Vol 1 & 2). Bud Powell was the first modern jazz pianist to lay the groundwork for succeeding players like Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea who memorized practically all of Bud's solos & Kenny Barron. Don't let the primitive recording quality on these sides deter you from enjoying this superb music--it is timeless. Also it is quite interesting to hear a 19 yr old Sonny Rollins with Bud and a young Roy Haynes on drums!!

Picked this CD out of the rack after not listening to it for years.
Los Lobos' Bertha interpretation is close to the original, but with a nice hint of accordion. Bruce Hornsby's Jack Straw is great, one can tell he played with the Dead many a time and I (for one ;-) think that he performed wonderfully with them over the years. Whatever you think of him, he can play piano.
Forget The Hashed Mellows' US Blues, what a disappointing straightforward rock-ish version that is. Elvis Costello's Ship of Fools is sort of interesting in the sense that he has some of Jerry's raspiness and I like the instrumentation.
Suzanne Vega's China Doll sounds like, well, a Vega tune, which isn't bad, but perhaps a bit dull. Happily her ... Read More:

Most people choose to associate the violin as a slowly played, quiet pretty/romantic instrument. I however, choose to think of the violin as a blistering, absolutely breath-takingly colorful and intense instrument, as shown on Imaginary Voyage. I love this guys music, and I love every single moment of the album. That's all I really need to say.

I really love this CD I needed to hear the 60s bossa nova music for my ballroom dance routine. It has the classic girl from ipanema as well as a really cool 60s version of Mas Que Nada. It has some really cute intermission segments in between tracks too. Very nice music for dinner party or if you need the original Bossa Nova.

I have been an RTF fan for more than 30 years. I first heard them when I was in a rock band in high school-I was about 17 at the time; other band members more music savvy than I was turned me on to them, and I remain an admirer of their music to this day. RTF really is/was a jazz rock fusion supergroup. Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, Al DiMeola, and Lenny White are each terrific musicians in their own right, and the years that have passed since the definitive RTF lineup broke up in 1976 have borne that out. Each member has produced excellent work in a variety of forms (Clarke, for example, has carved a niche for himself doing movie and tv scores in addition to his solo albums).
"Where Have I Known You Before" in particular has always been a favorite of mine, ... Read More:

I think most fans of jazz recordings made between the end of World War II and the start of the Vietnam Era, the period I think of as the golden years of jazz, would not name Red Garland as one of the top ten or even top 15 pianists. Those slots would go to Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Errol Garner, George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, and many other candidates who left us many recordings on which they were soloists or leaders of groups small and large. Red Garland left relatively few tracks on which he was the leader, including this album. He was in the Coleman Hawkins band, the first quintet put together by Miles Davis and was a sideman on many, many recordings fronted by other artists. This 1957 Prestige release has him being helped by the great bassist Paul Chambers, ... Read More:
