Had a copy of this album on *cassette tape* in the 90s; cannot wait to rip this CD to mu iPod now that it's arrived! Bought the Rock-a-bye colection of albums as lullaby song to play for our newborn that wouldn't drive mom and dad batty with saccharine sounds. This CD is better -- takes so many familiar and good Disney tunes and adds a mature sound that baby and parents can appreciate.

Just like O.J. ...... The fact that Phil is now involved in a huge murder trial does not diminish what was accomplished years ago........a great box set from one of the most creative producers ever. You will recognize almost every track....Yeah , so maybe the guy is guilty (that's for a jury to decide)... it does not take away his accomplishments of the past . Just like O.J. and his football records

These recordings from 1947-49 set the standard for "jazz with strings". Parker's playing is brilliant, as usual.
The strings add context and a luxuriant mood to Parker's sound. Only Stan Getz's "Focus" from 1961 compares in quality to "Charlie Parker with Strings: The Master Takes". Both are pivotal in the development of the "Third Stream" genre of jazz. Both occupy special places in my collection.

Why did I as high school boy who knew nothing about jazz, fusion, Chick Corea, Gary Burton or much of anything else pick up and buy this lp at MusicLand in the Tippecanoe Mall in about 1979? I don't know. I do know I was looking for something I'd never heard before, and this album drew me to it. Maybe it was the mysterious sunrise (or sunset?)picture on the cover. I distinctly remember picking it out though. Wow! What a great album. I've wandered around all kinds of music since, and have recently dusted off my old lps. This one still stands as a fave. My old vinyl is pretty crackly, so I look forward to getting a new CD of it and being wowed once again.

In the mid-1950s, after leaving the Stan Kenton band, Maynard set out to prove that he was a jazz player as well as a powerful high-note player. He started out by doing some jam session recordings and by the end of the decade was winning jazz polls and leading one of the best big bands in the business. This octet recording from 1955 is somewhere in between - it has the feeling of a jam session but with the tightly performed and well-written arrangements (by Bill Holman) that were characteristic of his later big band.

to melody or feeling. It was a showcase of technical talents and becomes
nerve wracking quickly. If you like scales you will love this.
