I'm not a big Pat Metheny fan. It's not that I don't appreciate his genius; I just never got around to listening to him very much (much to my dismay). In truth, I got this album because of Jaco. At first, I thought the whole work was a little too low-key and esoteric, but as I kept listening, I began thinking that this may be Jaco's finest. His fretless sound is indeed at its best, whether he's playing a slower melody line as in "Sirabhorn," or a funkier riff as on my favorite cut of the whole album, "Omaha Celebration." I think what surprises me most is how laid back Jaco is, and how much I like that he is laid back. Don't get me wrong -- I love the "in your face" Jaco. The title track is likely to hit the listener with the force of Hera's heavenly ethers seducing Zeus. It's some of the most relaxed, unforced playing on record, the musicians all sharing an empathetic wave length in a kind of suspended telepathic or mystical state. Coming as the last tune of the recording session, the musicians were tired but primed, ready to create with the jitters long gone and with exclusive concentration on each other and the music. Less than "perform," they seem to be meditating out loud, or telling stories to one another in hushed tones so the children won't awaken. i haven't seen her other dvd , but caught this concert while visiting family some while ago . i own it now . with anthony wilson (a killin' brit player) on guitar and peter erskine on drums , you are talking some serious swing my friends . i forget the bassist just at the moment , but he is terrific as well . the three musicians i mentioned by name are all leaders with many recordings in their respective catalogs . it's all here . the full range of expression . great sound and dynamic range do great honor to both whisper quiet intros and delicate solos as well as insanely swinging flights that rip it up . and what groves . expect to be transported . sublime . what a wonderful woman and what an exceptional group of artists . trad jazz 101

In the mid-1950s, after leaving the Stan Kenton band, Maynard set out to prove that he was a jazz player as well as a powerful high-note player. He started out by doing some jam session recordings and by the end of the decade was winning jazz polls and leading one of the best big bands in the business. This octet recording from 1955 is somewhere in between - it has the feeling of a jam session but with the tightly performed and well-written arrangements (by Bill Holman) that were characteristic of his later big band.

genius (literally) recordings; then again what has he done that isn't genius? A definite highlight in the infinite realms of the Thelonious, not to mention the beautiful art of Jazz music. You would be hard pressed to find a more technically spectacular acoustic guitar project. Linking up three of the worlds greatest would have virtually guaranteed critical success, but the varying compositions and techniques employed at such a constant pace ensures listeners you are indeed listening to the world's best-combined. All one can say in offense is that the skill level is just too high, compounding musical ideas into an almost overwhelming proficiency at turns.

Aptly named, Maiden Voyage features tracks that are nearly ideal for beginning jazz improvisers. The chord changes are not overly quick, nor are the tempi on the tunes. Like most of the packages that Jamey Aebersold has put together over the years, Maiden Voyage works best for players of melodic instruments (flute, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, guitar, etc.). This is useful for guitarists and pianists who want to practice their comping, as it is for bass players. The only problem with using the basic version of any of Aebersold's book/CD packages for comping or working out bass lines is that there is no soloist to react to.
