John Coltrane-Kulu Se` Mama *****
From the time John Coltrane recorded A Love Supreme and Meditations was raughly one full year. In that time Coltrane managed to take everything he had done before and twist it into a billion different things and then created a ton more. Kulu Se` Mama may not be the most popular release from this period or as classic as the two book ends (A Love Supreme, Meditations) but it is a personal favorite.
Combining where he was to go with free jazz with where he had already been and conquered Kulu Se` Mama is one of the most uplifting and powerful albums ever released. Both intense and full of restraint the feel of the album is otherworldly.
The title track is a poem read over ... Read More:

I'm crazy about Tomasz Stanko, Keith Jarrett, and ECM in general, but like Tord Gustavsen's Being There, I'm not moved by this. It's as if it's trying too hard to be ethereal and beautiful. Maybe someday I'll see something in it that I don't see now, as I did with Paul Motian Trio.

I was expecting a lot more technical playing on this album, and after the first listening session I said to myself"hmm...it's good chill music, but there isn't much substance." After hearing these gentle, flowing tunes a few more times though I realized that this isn't supposed to be a "balls-to-walls" action-packed album;the idea which makes this music amazing is that it's meant to be a mental "seasoning".I use it while doing mellow chores, cooking, etc. and it is a great cognitive comforter which sets a nice pace for easy activities.zorn fans might be hit-n-miss on this one,but it's great chill music!

I admit it. When this album came out all those years ago, I wanted to like it as much as I knew it deserved, but I couldn't. It was just too freaking weird, and if it was too weird for a Residents fan like myself, you know it had to be FAR OUT.
I absolutely loved the beautiful cover art, but the "music"? On previous releases, The Residents had made legends of themselves by deconstructing, demolishing, warping and reconstructing "rock" music into all sorts of weird mutations. But underneath all the strangeness, one could still feel the familiar beat of rock music.
With "Eskimo", they just completely left rock music behind. Not just rock, but all Western music, and all African-derived music forms. They also left English behind, and created ... Read More:

*Another month on and let me say, I wish I'd given this four stars. Man, I really like this CD. As I said in my original review, I come back to this a lot now, and I'm going to add some more Frisell to my CD collection very soon.
Let me start this review by saying right off: I'm not a big fan of jazz guitar. For years I wondered where dentists got the music in their office, until one day, I heard Pat Metheny. Ah yes, that's it, I thought. Frisell is a little different though. I can't tell you exactly what makes it different, but I suppose the variety of songs and approaches to the music itself are what make this CD last longer for me. Anyway, I like this better than any Metheny stuff I've listened to, yet. If you are a jazz guitar fan, I think you will like ... Read More:

Maria Schneider has rightly been accorded the highest accolades for her arranging abilities, consistently winning top jazz readers and critics polls. Until this spectacular recording, her composing and band-leading abilities have lagged slightly behind. Allegresse changes all that.
She's managed to retain--even extend--the brilliance of her arrangements while adding riveting compositions and consummate band leadership. And what a band it is! This strikes me as the most fluid, most accomplished, most consistently brilliant big band ever. Featuring some of the absolute best players at their positions, especially Frank Kimbrough, my current favorite pianist; Ben Monder, perhaps the best of the younger guitarists; Tony Scherr, a masterful acoustic and electric bassist; ...
