I wanted to like this album, I really did. But my husband agrees with me, this is rubbish. We own every GBS CD and DVD, and this CD does not improve with increased play. There are two, maybe three tracks that stand out, and no surprise they are the more "traditional" ones. I can indulge "Rocker Alan" for a couple of songs, but not the whole album, and I hate when Sean sings high-pitched ballads. Bob is excellent, as always. Even some of the harmonies sound weak (miss you Darryl!). This album seems very disjointed, like they took all the songs that were scrapped from prior albums and threw them together in this collection. For more contemporary GBS I'd recommend "Sea of No Cares" or "Something Beautiful" before this one. Hopefully they wise up ... Read More:

Jagged Little Pill

This album, "Jagged Little Pill", is the best that Alanis has put out to date. In this CD she is a girly version of Mike Muir a.k.a. Cyco Miko, pissed off and looking for confrontation. Gotta love the "Cross eye'd bear" track; One of her best! Over all a very relaxing listening album, like "Agent Orange", or "Devo".

I can't add any better words to all the rich descriptions said about her and this album from others, except that she is one of a kind. Anything she does is unique and connects. The only other singer/songwriter I felt drawn to because of his unique sound and story-telling is Cat Stevens. It's because they both sing with raw emotion and passion and their lyrics are so dang profound! Get this album. Get all of 'em!

always a treat when elvis gets the rock quartet thing going again...not the best...and i miss the attractions (bruce thomas) but it's better than 90% of the rock music out there.

You want anything good that's acoustic guitar? Get something by Nick Drake or Andrew Collins (or Mandolin, but close), Elliot Smith, Dave Matthews Band (as long as it's not everyday, ick), R.E.M. heck, the Beatles have an arsenal of wicked, beautiful acoustic guitars. He's retiring, by the way.

I always liked Loreena McKennitt, but it wasn't until I saw her "Nights of the Alhambra" DVD that I became a real fan. Prior to that, I was attracted by her beautiful voice and her haunting arrangements of traditional Celtic music. But after seeing "Alahambra", I realized that she also plays several instruments with virtuousity, and is a great performer! Now, when I listen to her new Ancient Muse DVD, I get more out of it, because it recalls the concert and makes the experience a (virtual) visual as well as an audio treat!

"An Invitation" is a collaboration across generations and a recording to treasure. Inara George and Van Dyke Parks go back a long way -- to 1974, when Inara (daughter of Little Feat's Lowell George) was born.

"An Invitation" is much like a theater-piece, complete with overture and a closing "Good night, good night to all of you." The songs are beautiful and spare; George sings them in a strong, cool, unstagey voice that makes the meaning of every word register. Her poignant and witty lyrics offer varied glimpses of someone in love, desirous, self-abasing, jubilant, ruefully self-aware, still hopeful. Parks' arrangements for small orchestra are elegant and endlessly supportive.
