I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY BROTHER WHO IS A BLUES FAN AND HE REQUESTED THIS ONE AND MANY MORE AND SOOO ENJOYS THE OLE' BLUES...A SOFT BUT GREAT SOUND
Release Date February 20, 1996
I loved the Lusty, vibrant Leadbelly on my old LP. Man, his voice and that great 12-string guitar just filled the room. But this cd remastering is a flunk, sounds like a whine in an adjoining room. This is not the first disappointing cd remastering I've bought on line. But I have some great ones as well. Seems like the poor ones are a product of low remastering standards. I'm gonna stick to buying in a store.
Release Date April 16, 1995
I hope the original version still exists.(this one is missing 2 dynamite cuts)
I believe this incarnation of bluesbreakers represents the greatest electric blues band ever assembled.
Reeves and Hiseman, in particular, are the most amazing rhythmn section ever.Chris Mercer Aaaaand Dick H. Smith.
MICK TAYLOR! add in a tasty violinist, a smoothe coronet man, and of course
Big John himself!
Find the original and enjoy!

This "Trouble In Mind" compilation from the Smithsonian is the best collection of Broonzy's later period acoustic work. I think this is a better collection than the other 'best of' compilation ("Absolutely The Best" on Varese Records). The remastering on these tracks is excellent and they are the best sounding recordings of Broonzy I have ever heard. The songs here are all of his classics. The only thing that's disappointing is that they left off the track "Never Satisfied", which would have made this the ultimate collection of Broonzy acoustic blues songs. Highly recommended!

One-man-band, Scott H. Biram travels to some dark places on "Graveyard Shift." Certainly, that statement is not a revelation, merely a confirmation. Mr. Biram performs all the music, employing electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica, and organ, plus various other instruments (oops, not so fast, a fellow named Ethan Shaw contributes some steel guitar on the track 18 Wheeler Fever).
The primal mix of rock (heavy stuff), blues, gospel, country and whatever else one wants to look for suggests Mr. Biram either vacations in Hell or gnaws brimstone for breakfast. There are no silver-linings here, just gut-checks and coal-black images that linger a bit too long. Though there is a certain flatness in spots (imagine how these songs might sound with a full band of conspirators ... Read More:

I love the assembly of songs, but to me they all seem too clean, too tame, and too "studio" ...versions of songs which he did better on other recordings. I have it and I'll keep it, but there are better sessions out there.

I've just bought this CD for the 4th time - along with Jack Dupree's "Blues From The Gutter", it's the one I give away when I really want to give, and turn someone on to the blues.
It contains JBs last 2 albums before his untimely death in 1967, and represents the full flowering of his groundbreaking African Hunch style. JB was a popular Chicago electric blues musician who gradually evolved a new acoustic sound - syncretising a lot of what had come before, from gritty Delta guitar to barrelhouse-piano style syncopation, and more than a touch of gospel - but sounding fresh and modern; he was moving forwards not back. Sadly this style seems to have died with him; the world has not caught up yet.
All tracks have JB on acoustic guitar and vocals (those words hardly ... Read More:

I dont know what else to say in here that is not already covered, only this is now my 9th Van CD on my ipod. while allot of all bleeds together in "sameness" it just works. I use shuffle and my pod is on most of the day, so this kind of music along with classical opera and bluegrass just seems to work great for all day listening.
Release Date October 25, 1990
I first bought this album on vinyl in the mid seventies. It has been one of my favorites over the years. This live performance was recorded in 1965, the year before his death. He was in excellent form and both his playing and voice were in top shape. John's very original fingerpicking style was first captured in 1928 and was different than any other blues at the time. His warmth and humor are felt throughout this album. Buy it. You won't be sorry.

A number of people here are saying that the music CD included in this package is only so-so, and that they purchased this product exclusively for the DVD. For those of you out there wanting to purchase this item for the DVD, you should know that the footage on that DVD can be seen online for free. Much of it for example appears as clips on metacafe. They are the clips where Jay exhibits card cheating (such as bottom dealing and "how to cheat an honest man") to a table of his friends, among them being the twerpy guy from Sex and the City and the actor John C. Reilly. By the way, you can also see Ricky Jay performing similar feats in the little-known film, The Ranger, The Cook and the Hole in the Sky.
