It's hard to imagine that anything could be better than the original Folkways box set (Volumes 1-3), but this album is. Everything I love about V1-3, there is even more of here. The eerie juxtaposition of darkness and jubilation pretty much sums up the whole 20th Century in an hour and a half. Yes, it's short and pricey, but better in my mind to preserve Smith's original vision - after all, he scuttled the original release of this album in order to stay true to that vision.

I was so impressed with this album - especially "A Few Feet Away From You"; "Mexican Cowboy"; and "Maharaja's Daughter". The album title is apt - this music is very circular without much story line in the lyrics, but the effect is unique - even brilliant. Beautiful use of trumpet lines on this album to create both pleasing dissonance and harmony. Buy it!

This is truly a classic of that old time spiritual gospel we all grew up on. Every time I hear anything by Dr. Thomas Dorsey, it takes me back to my childhood and going to church with my grandmama in Alabama... a MUST have CD!

This is the perfect box set. The liner notes are great, the packaging is fine, and the music contained on these discs is simply stunning. Lonnie's work with Texas Alexander doesn't sound like anything else committed to record. "Section Gang Blues" and "Levee Camp Moan" are startling in their intensity. His guitar duets with Eddie Lang will never lose their novelty, because they are music on the level of the Classical music of Europe. "Away Down in The Alley Blues" and "Hot Fingers" are mind-boggling. Lonnie's Blues lyrics are original and greatly detailed. He is the master of romantic balladry. He is a pioneer in Rhythm & Blues. He knows how to use double-entendre, and he certainly seems to have a true distrust of women!

This little-known early album showcases a much more country, much more raw Lucinda Williams. It is not as great as her follow up self-titled album or Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but it is very good in its own right and has some great songs, particularly the title track, Lafayette and the original, faster version of I Think I Lost It, which she re-recorded on Car Wheels.

First,I have to admit a thing or two: I absolutely love Muldaur's last two acoustic blues albums, second I frequently listen 1920s blues queens on my I-pod (I collect with interest & enthusiasm their original music) so naturaly I was very excited and curious about this album. It might be that I'm too familiar with originals but I have impression that while Muldaur honestly loved & enjoyed previous two albums, this is done for the sake of finishing the trilogy. The magic is present only on duet with Bonnie Raitt who gracefuly harmonises from behind and dont push herself too much in front, excatly as young Muldaur did on her 1968 recording of the same song with great late Sippie Wallace.Althought Muldaur herself have talent, ability, attitude and formal connections with ... Didn't see that one coming aye?
This is the first album from the pseudo stoner indie rock band cake. For any of you familiar with their biggest hit album Fashion Nugget it may be a little strange (I tend to believe that if you know of other albums other than Nugget, then you probably know this one already...)
Cake have a cult fan base, mainly of people that like what can be defined as light and quirky music. In most later outings the band has a lot of funky beats going down along with a brass section and keys and other weird types of rythyms. I've always dug them.
Their first album is real lo-fi, and it sounds mainly like it could have been recorded in a garage, but the trademark brass is still there, along with a lot of catchy tunes, ... Read More:

The sounds on this self-titled CD (Po'Girl) by the Vancouver duo conjure up images of steamy, sexy, hot vacation filled interludes surrounded with daiquiris and hammocks. A wonderful collaboration between Trish Klein (of the Be Good Tanyas) and Allison Russell, Po' Girl is wealthy in vocal talent, and lightened by the harmonica, fiddle and banjo.
I am out to buy, "Home to you," and "Vagabond Lullabies."
