This CD isn't the best anything. It's just a good starter cd for the new Blues listener, and a good listen for the more experienced. So I'll rate it a good. It probably deserves three stars but I'm a sucker for slide guitar so I gave it four.

Let's face it folks, with a name like Alligator Records, they've got to be good. Two CDs exploding at the seams with blues in all of its incarnations. Real country folk blues, Cephas & Wiggins, rip-it-up bayou blues, C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, wailing harp Chicago South Side blues, James Cotton, misbehavin' mama blues, Koko Taylor, guitar god blues, Roy Buchanan, thinly veiled sexual reference blues, David Hole, and whole lot more besides. 38 tracks in all, and you probably won't care for one or two of them - but whatever your 10 favorites end up being, they will surely justify the low cost of this anthology.
I've been listening to blues for quite some time, since the days of the Taft administration actually. ... Read More:

Keaton Simons was the opener for Paul Thorn at a club date I attended last September. Thorn has been out there a number of years, and I love his songs: great music and killer lyrics. He's also a fantastic live performer. I had never heard of Simons, but his music was incredible. He performed a couple of songs from the EP, and, more importantly, three or four from the full-length CD. He is an incredible storyteller with a beautiful voice. He accompanied himself on the guitar at the Thorn show, and that was all he needed. I saw him at the bar after the show and talked to him a little bit. It turned out that the songs I liked the best from his performance were NOT on the EP but would be on the CD. I bought a copy of the EP from him anyway and ... Read More:

Once again Bill gaither and his homecoming friends have put together a collection of songs that hit deep into your soul.

Bruce Nemerov's accompanying booklet won the Grammy in 2008 as the "Best Album Notes of the year." They are really a contribution to serious thinking about the Black folk music tradition. Bruce opens a door into the life and work of John Work III. I hope Nemerov follows up with more substantial publication on the importance of John Work III.
As a student of Black folk music who admires John Work III, my emphasis is more on the meaning of these recordings. But I want to say this is just good music if you don't care about its cultural significance. I find it hard to get through each track without hitting the replay button on my CD player. For those not familiar with Black folk music, this recording will open the door to all kinds of good ... Read More:

Francis "Scrapper" Blackwell was not only one of the legendary pre-war virtouosos - who, as Leroy Carr's guitarist, essentially defined what is now called "urban blues" - but a capable singer-songwriter, too. In this album he essentialy re-visited some of his pre-war material (e.g. "Penal Farm Blues", his first 78rpm single) and managed to create an album which, I think, should be included in every collection that prouds to have gone deep into the blues.
Although age had by then left visible signs on Blackwell's voice, he is at least moving singing "Goin' Where The Monon Crosses The Yellow Dog", and also in moments like "Little Boy Blue" or "Shady Lane". But, although these are good reasons to buy this album themselves, the most stunning performance comes ... Read More:

A number of people here are saying that the music CD included in this package is only so-so, and that they purchased this product exclusively for the DVD. For those of you out there wanting to purchase this item for the DVD, you should know that the footage on that DVD can be seen online for free. Much of it for example appears as clips on metacafe. They are the clips where Jay exhibits card cheating (such as bottom dealing and "how to cheat an honest man") to a table of his friends, among them being the twerpy guy from Sex and the City and the actor John C. Reilly. By the way, you can also see Ricky Jay performing similar feats in the little-known film, The Ranger, The Cook and the Hole in the Sky.
