Its snowing hard outside and I have the stereo on,not too loud.As I try to decide how to write this review, turning it over and over in my head I get visions of times gone past when you had to prove how good you were a song at a time, one person at a time. One man,one guitar.....John Fahey posesses a guitar playing style influenced by many but written, arranged and performed like no other person on this planet.
Covering recording sessions from Joe Bussards basement studio in 59 thru to 63-64 and 67 in Berkley, this disc is what that vision from the past and one extraordinary guitarist capable of lyrical songs with no words and sounds new to all but some can achieve - the sound called American Primitive.
On the 78`s of yesterday were all ... Read More:

The Otis Taylor sound on the surface is simple. A repetitive groove and lyrics creating an almost a trance like vibe. The emotions they convey are an entirely different matter. His music is somewhat fleshed out this time with daughter Cassie adding a nice touch on vocals and bass. Songs like 'Mama's Selling Heroin'and 'Sounds of Attica are typical slices of 'REAL LIFE. Another sterling work of passion and soul. Taylor's impressive array of recordings continues.

One-Dime Blues, Etta Baker, Rounder Records, 1991
Recently I mentioned in reviewing Elizabeth Cotton's Freight Train album from Folkways that there was something appealing about these North Carolina style guitar pickers. It is different from the Delta pick, for sure. They pick cleanly, simply but with verve. The Delta is a little more heavy-handed reflecting, I think, the woes of picking that cotton all week. Damn, I would be guitar picking like Keith Richards under those conditions. Ms. Baker shows her stuff here on this almost exclusively instrumental album from Rounder Records. The one vocal that she does do here -Broken-Hearted Blues- makes me wish that she had done more vocals but the guitar can carry her through on this album- no ... Read More:

A "Dirty Linen" magazine review of this CD prompted me to order this disc. What a blast of fun! Lund's sound firmly roots in barband country. However, his music has such energy, wit and humor, that it stands a cut above. The title track spits out lyrics like a bazooka on fire, "Spring in my step like a white-tailed deer; Hitch in my hip like an old sheep dog; puff up my chest like a big bull frog." It's totally addictive. "The Truck Got Stuck" talk-sings charmingly with Tammy Rogers' fiddle burning the strings, "Richie, he now fears the worst, stood up his ex-wife; She called him a jerk." "Always Keep an Edge on Your Knife" radiates sunshine. The tempo finally slows on "The Rodeo's Over" with Lund's lonesome homespun vocals sounding like a newfound ... Read More:

This is a classic album that no fan of Kelly Joe Phelps should miss collecting. It is becoming rare and difficult to find. Kelly at his very best.

Like many of the negative reviewers here, I, too, was surprised at this CD. I was expecting the same folksy blues as his other albums.
But this CD is wonderful in its own way. This is happy family music, which goes back to the roots of folk music. It's stuff with a strong values, a good message, that's easy to sing along (whether with children, or maybe you just need a smile).
I had to post this review in defense of this CD. No, it's not my favorite Keb Mo. But when I need a smile, I pop in this CD. This is not impressive music from a technical/artistic perspective - his wife and kids sing (and even his grandmother, I think). But this is such a gem - it's charming in its own way.
Sure, I wish I'd known in advance what to expect ... Read More:

In a review of a Hank Williams anthology in this space I noted that I have been listening to a local weekend folk, rock and contemporary music interview show here in Boston for years. The format of the show is to interview, in depth, contemporary well know singers, songwriters and musicians as well as young unknowns looking to make their mark. One of the questions always asked of each interviewee is about formative influences on their musical development. Although I do not believe that I have ever heard what I would consider a country singer interviewed on the show the name Hank Williams has come up many more times than any other from young and old interviewee alike. Here some of those well-known musicians pay tribute to his influence by covering his songs for a 50th Anniversary ... Read More:

First let me say I'm a HUGE fan of Wolfman & The Roadmasters and thrilled that they have been able to release yet another album. Out Of The Dark is still my favorite Wolfman album but this new release is definately moving up the list. If you like good, funky, R&B/blues/jazz/soul you will enjoy this album. Buy a bunch of copies and give them to your friends and let's hope that we can keep this great band out on the road and bringing this great music to our towns. Keep up the good work Wolfman... Hopefully we'll see you in East Tennessee soon!
