CD-Charts Music : At the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room

At the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room

CD-Charts > Music > Acoustic Blues
by: Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings

Release Date August 23, 2005
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really ... Read More:

by: Corb Lund

Release Date September 19, 2006
A "Dirty Linen" magazine review of this CD prompted me to order this disc. What a blast of fun! Lund's sound firmly roots in barband country. However, his music has such energy, wit and humor, that it stands a cut above. The title track spits out lyrics like a bazooka on fire, "Spring in my step like a white-tailed deer; Hitch in my hip like an old sheep dog; puff up my chest like a big bull frog." It's totally addictive. "The Truck Got Stuck" talk-sings charmingly with Tammy Rogers' fiddle burning the strings, "Richie, he now fears the worst, stood up his ex-wife; She called him a jerk." "Always Keep an Edge on Your Knife" radiates sunshine. The tempo finally slows on "The Rodeo's Over" with Lund's lonesome homespun vocals sounding ... Read More:

Timeless: Hank Williams Tribute

CD-Charts > Music > Acoustic Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date September 25, 2001
In a review of a Hank Williams anthology in this space I noted that I have been listening to a local weekend folk, rock and contemporary music interview show here in Boston for years. The format of the show is to interview, in depth, contemporary well know singers, songwriters and musicians as well as young unknowns looking to make their mark. One of the questions always asked of each interviewee is about formative influences on their musical development. Although I do not believe that I have ever heard what I would consider a country singer interviewed on the show the name Hank Williams has come up many more times than any other from young and old interviewee alike. Here some of those well-known musicians pay tribute to his influence by covering ... Read More:

Vietnam Blues: The Complete L&R Recording

CD-Charts > Music > Acoustic Blues
by: J.B. Lenoir

Release Date June 27, 1995
I've just bought this CD for the 4th time - along with Jack Dupree's "Blues From The Gutter", it's the one I give away when I really want to give, and turn someone on to the blues.

It contains JBs last 2 albums before his untimely death in 1967, and represents the full flowering of his groundbreaking African Hunch style. JB was a popular Chicago electric blues musician who gradually evolved a new acoustic sound - syncretising a lot of what had come before, from gritty Delta guitar to barrelhouse-piano style syncopation, and more than a touch of gospel - but sounding fresh and modern; he was moving forwards not back. Sadly this style seems to have died with him; the world has not caught up yet.

All tracks have JB on acoustic guitar ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Heroes of the Blues - The Very Best of Reverend Gary Davis

Heroes of the Blues - The Very Best of Reverend Gary Davis

CD-Charts > Music > Acoustic Blues
by: Rev. Gary Davis

Release Date August 26, 2003
The Reverend Gary Davis is one of the exemplars of the blues. Many of his songs have been picked up by other artists and groups. For instance, the Grateful Dead took his rendition of Samson and Delilah and made it one of their concert favorites. There are also many other blues and gospel songs to enjoy listening to. He sure plays the banjo and guitar with aplomb that preceded other great guitar players of the rock & roll and country traditions.

by: Keb' Mo', Keb' Mo'

Release Date September 09, 2003
I must admit I had always thought Keb Mo was a little generic as a blues artist until I came across this CD in Scorcese box set. Put it in the CD player just to get a little better idea about where Keb is coming from and man was I surprised. This is really good. His cover of Robert Johnson's "Come In My Kitchen" is probably the best cover of this song I have ever heard. "Henry" is probably my favorite, just a nice smooth relaxing song. This is a good CD to listen to on summer night, it just sounds like summer to me. All in all I'm glad I gave this CD a chance because now I see Keb is a really great modern blues artist and there aren't many of those around now.

Trouble in Mind

CD-Charts > Music > Acoustic Blues
by: Big Bill Broonzy

Release Date February 22, 2000
This "Trouble In Mind" compilation from the Smithsonian is the best collection of Broonzy's later period acoustic work. I think this is a better collection than the other 'best of' compilation ("Absolutely The Best" on Varese Records). The remastering on these tracks is excellent and they are the best sounding recordings of Broonzy I have ever heard. The songs here are all of his classics. The only thing that's disappointing is that they left off the track "Never Satisfied", which would have made this the ultimate collection of Broonzy acoustic blues songs. Highly recommended!

Release Date August 16, 2005
I love this album. Mississippi John Hurt has such a soothing voices. This is a must for any blues fan, or anyone who likes to listen to music for that matter.

Being from Arkansas near where the blues originated, I have been able to attend many blues festivals and hear many artists. Mississippi John Hurt ranks on the top of great blues musicians.
