This is an essential Christmas choral CD. The program itself is fabulous and unique, lacking the tacky "favorites" found on most recordings of this type. Entirely a cappella except for two Rutter arrangements with orchestra. Not a single track is lacking in depth and sincerity.
Polyphony is one phenomenal choir. For its small size, it has truly unmatched sustaining power and control (demonstrated most astonishingly in Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium and the end of Howells' A Spotless Rose). The only disappointment on the entire disc is Grieg's gorgeous "Ave Maris Stella" in which, for whatever reason, the men sing with a rather unblended and even wobbly sound while the women are almost entirely straight-tone. "Sing Lullaby" by Howells ... Read More:

I bought this album because I looked at the track list and saw that it had all the hits I knew and loved. Sadly, once I listened to it, I was very disappointed to hear some of my favorite songs (The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Happy Together, and Poison Ivy to name a few) remixed with an awful 80's drum machine. If you want the real goods, purchase the original 1982 self titled Nylons album,I wish I had. I would have given it 1 star, but it still contains the original versions of some songs including Love Potion #9 and Duke of Earl.

The usual Part; resonant, hauting, spiritual, relaxing. Even better is that I prefer his vocal works to his instremental.

Sure, you won't find much a cappella on this one, hence the poor ratings by other listeners. And since so many have tried to keep these guys in the "A Cappella Box" that's understandable. But there are some really powerful tracks, that still justify a second listen for the more open minded. #3 I'll Be There, #5 Chance Of A Lifetime, #6 Can't Stop Thinking 'Bout You, #7 Jesus Makes Me Happy, #8 We Don't Have To Cry and #10 Don't Let Go. If put on any other artist's CD, all would have been highly praised. But these guys just don't get the respect for their diversity, so richly deserved.
Poor choices of singles have also been a problem of the past. Track #2 You Don't Have To Be Afraid, though not a bad song, somehow was chosen over others, seemingly ... Read More:

I just nominated this CD as a best choral recording for Chorus America's newly created "Choral Recordings Archive."
The disc features soaring, gentle, a cappella, and (mostly) late-romantic English choral gems sung with exquisite tone and shaped with a celestial sensitivity. I would have been happier if the disc had ended with Bairstow's "The oak and the ash," as the remaining tracks --"Quick we have but a second" of Stanford, and Britten's Five Flower Songs -- strike me as a jarring departure from the feel of the rest of the disc. But the earlier selections are just incomparably sung.

This boxed set was for my husband, a classical music lover, who will be singing the Requiem with a choir in April. The music is beautiful and the set is great because it has so many of Brahms' works; HOWEVER, the libretto and all the small books that accompanied the set are in French. If that fact were listed in the description I missed it. The set was a birthday gift and I feel like I gave my husband a half gift.

Lesley Garrett has one of the most beautiful voices around. If you're a fan of soprano voices such as Kiri, Lisa Vroman, etc., you'll enjoy this album.

I came across this album when I was trying to put together some Halloween music to get in the right mood to assist in the dispensing of candies to costumed visitors (when I would rather be saving the candy for myself) and I came across the Mighty Echoes cover of "Monster Mash." We are talking about the definitive Halloween song with "Monster Mash," but it was refreshing to hear a slightly different version of the classic novelty hit done by a quartet of guys who can really sing and sing a cappella.
Actually, while all of these albums are done in the Doo Wop style of four-part harmony, very few of them were originally considered Doo Wop songs (e.g., "Sh-Boom" and "Blue Moon"). Yet you will be hard pressed to remember that songs like "Fools Fall in Love," "Teenager in ... Read More:

Just what we expected from this CD. We knew a lot of the songs by listening to them before we bought this CD but I got it for my husband for Christmas and he loves it.
