But THIS is awesome. You don't have to be a gospel fan to appreciate the tight harmonies these guys are capable of. If you have a slight appreciation for old time or bluegrass, there's a 99% chance you're going to like this album.

Having heard many times ZM's version of "Iko Iko", the very best version ever, I was very disappointed that there were two versions of A Ma Zone, since I bought the one without "Iko Iko". Now I am searching for their version of that song. Any explanation?

The magazine "Friends of Cathedral Music" recently described Winchester Cathedral Choir under David Hill as one of England's greatest musical treasures, and this CD confirms that statement nicely. Aside from one track, the music is all unaccompanied, and I'm pleased to report that it all stays perfectly in tune. There is a broad variety of music here arranged into a very fulfilling programme. Samuel Barber's "Agnus Dei" is his own transcription of the famous "Adagio for Strings" made famous in the soundtracks of such films as 'Platoon', and this recording really will haunt you for a long time... David Hill follows this with his own recent piece, "Dominus Illuminatio" which is very effective and brilliantly sung, ... Read More:

Quincy Jones already rocks my world. I have nothing but respect for him and the level of musical excellence that has always surrounded anything he put his considerable mind and talent to. But this re-imagining of Handel's Messiah from an African-American perspective is exceptional, extraordinary, unabated joy--especially in "And He Shall Purify" and "Hallelujah!" I am a middle-aged white musician/pianist/voice teacher in New York City. I got my Master's at Indiana University in voice. I was raised a Southern-Baptist even! I only offer up this information to suggest what an unlikely candidate I might be to enjoy this CD. I can't stop smiling and moving with these extraordinary performances when I put this CD on. God bless Michael O. Jackson for these vocal ... Read More:

This is a very beautiful recording. Now, it may be pointless to describe why one recommends a vocal recording: vocal production, and in particular the sound of a choir, seems to be a very idiosynchratic and personal taste. An ensemble that sounds great to you might sound terrible to me, and that's just the way it is.
So for what it's worth, I guess what I love most about this ensemble is its clarity. There's a purity of tone and transparency of texture that is perfect for this music, which (as with most singing, if you ask me) would be spoiled by a big, muddy sound. I suspect that this quality is due in part to the small size of the group and the lack of too much vibrato in individual voices, among other things.

Frederica Von Stade is at present my favorite mezzo-soprano out there. This disc gives a wonderful example of her vocal powers and style. If you are a moderate opera/lieder-listener, this cd has many tracks which are pleasant and accessible, however an aficienado would find much to be delighted with as well.
