The Nylons once again provide us with a disc that shows why, when it comes to a capella singing, they remain the best. This album opens with a cascade/explosion of voices that burst into the Dion classic "Ruby Baby," lifting the disc off the ground in a dynamic way. Their forte is to take an instantly familiar song and make it their own, and I consider The Nylons one of the very few acts to be able to take on a Beatles' song without making me regret hearing it. As in their past choices ("Because," "Lady Madonna"), the life they breathe into "Let It Be" restates the original's anthemic qualities without detracting from the vocalistic blend. (I have on my wish lists of CD's an album that is comprised of ... Read More:

A better recording of Motets is that one with Matthew Best and Corydon Singers (Hyperion,****). On the other hand, the sound of John Alldis Choir is very beautiful (especially the sopranos are better than those on Best's recording). I find the St John's College Choir absolutely inappropriate for a recording of Bruckner's motets. I recommend to compare the the Te Deum on this CD with that conducted by Jochum (DG). The most beautifullly sung pieces of the entire CD-set are probably that of Strauss.

We purchased this album after an evening on listening to Vocolot at a concern at our Temple. The music is wonderful, uplifting and entertaining. It is a mixture of Hebrew, English, Yiddish and spanish music. The five womens voices mix beautifully with percussion and other intesting instruments including a bit of Ham-boning. It is a mixture of old music with new arrangements and new music. Definitely worth listening to over and over.

My love of die Prinzen started 2 years ago, in 8th grade German class. One of the German videos that go along with our textbook included the "Millionaer" music video. That is an absolutely awesome song, and a hilarious video. Anyway, "Schweine" is the only album I own, but I really like it. It is indeed extremely techno, and I would recommend having a tolerance of techno music before buying this cd. But I really do like it. Die Prinzen are really funny. Their singing is wonderful and the lyrics (the ones i understand) are great. My favorite song is "Kannst du mir noch einmal verzeih'n?". It's great, but I don't really like "Hau' endlich ab" because this woman with a really high voice sings it. If you like die Prinzen, or even if you've never ... Read More:

A title like "Songs of Seduction" conjures many possibilities for music. What I didn't expect when I first put this one on was a quavery, old voice stumbling through a few verses of "Blackbirds and Thrushes" before chortling hoarsely. But that's precisely how "Songs of Seduction," a new release from "The Alan Lomax Collection," begins. And there's more of the same -- 33 tracks in all, most featuring creaky, timeworn voices eroded by years of work and whiskey. What a treasure!
Alan Lomax is a beloved name in folk revivalism, capturing a dying style of music before it vanished and, as a result, helping to bring it back bigger than ever before. This album, and others in the re-issued series from Rounder Records, is the product of several years in ... Read More:

But THIS is awesome. You don't have to be a gospel fan to appreciate the tight harmonies these guys are capable of. If you have a slight appreciation for old time or bluegrass, there's a 99% chance you're going to like this album.
