Vaughan Williams: Over hill, over dale

CD-Charts > Music > A Cappella
from: Hyperion UK

Release Date November 21, 1995
THIS MUSIC DEPICTS A SAMPLING OF RALPH V.W. CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END, AND WHAT BEAUTY HE GAVE US!

Ralph Vaughan-Williams loved "the lilt of the chorus at the music hall...children dancing to a barrel organ, the rousing fervor of a Salvation Army Hymn, St.Paul's and a great choir singing at one of its festivals...the Welshmen striking up one of their own hymns...the cries of street pedlars, the factory girls singing their sentimental songs." This disc somehow reflects all of these influences. I think it makes him a true folksong specialist!

The music included herein covers the whole of the composer's long career-from "The Willow Song" written when he was eighteen, to "Heart's Music",composed three ... Read More:

Brahms: Motets

by: Johannes Brahms, Philippe Herreweghe

Release Date April 26, 2000
Many experienced classical concertgoers and record-collectors very likely know Brahms's instrumental music and the big choral works with orchestra nearly by heart. For myself I could probably hum, sing or whistle most of it without significant errors, although for good and understandable reasons I am never asked to do so. This disc, under the direction of an eminent specialist in ancient music, shows us another face of the composer and a very important one. At different stages of his career Brahms served as director of choral societies, and he made the performance of mediaeval unaccompanied polyphony a central part of the curriculum. Certain features of the ancient art had never lapsed, fugues for one thing being displayed as a badge of pride by ... Read More:

Chanson D'Amour

by: King's Singers

Release Date March 09, 1993

A Cappella

from: Telarc

Release Date July 26, 2005
Robert Shaw is still considered on of the finest choral conductors this country has ever produced. When he took over the podium of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra some felt his talents were being wasted on orchestral influence: a few seasons into the role as an orchestral conductor erased the doubts of his ability in that realm. One of the aspects of his tenure programming was always to include the major works for orchestra and chorus and fortunately most of those works were recorded before his death.

In this superb CD Robert Shaw returns to his roots as choral conductor, presenting a group of a cappella works that demonstrates just how wide-ranging was his repertoire and a renewed appreciation for this gifts in drawing the very finest ... Read More:

Release Date July 15, 1999
Fantastic group from England. They do mostly or all covers. I love the accapella (excuse spelling errors) versions of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," and "Tears of a Clown," but their version of Dillon's "Masters of War," is the best. The song should be blaring from every radio today. Check it out. I don't think there is a song on this album that I don't like. Make sure the version you get has "Masters of War" on it. My first CD got stolen, and the one it was replaced with didn't have that song. I have it again, thanks to the internet.

Martin: Mass / Songs Of Ariel / Cantate / Chansons / Ode A La Musique

CD-Charts > Music > A Cappella
by: Frank Martin, The Sixteen, Harry Christophers

Release Date March 15, 2005
This is a reissue of a 1996 Collins Classics CD. Here's what I said about that disc, slightly updated:
With the exception of the enormously popular Mass for Unaccompanied Double Choir (1922/26) & the oft-recorded English-language Songs of Ariel (1950) to texts from Shakespeare, Frank Martin's most significant choral music is found in his 4 large-scale oratorios: In Terra Pax (1944), Golgotha (1945-8), Le Mystere de la Nativite (1957-9) & the Requiem (1970-1). This CD gathers together some of the shorter pieces from throughout his career, together with the Mass & Ariel Songs. Some of the performances come off better than others, largely because the various works were written for very different resources. The Sixteen do very well in the ... Read More:

Doo Wop Box, Vol. 3: 101 More Vocal Group Gems from the Golden Age of Rock-N-Roll

Release Date August 01, 2000
Doo Wop Box #3 has its moments - there are many really good tunes on it - but it falls far short of the first two sets, which were excellent. Disc 3 contains a couple of tunes that were featured in the first 2 sets but otherwise has some really scarce tunes. Disc 4 in this set is a complete waste of time and is suitable for use as a frisbee or coaster. Rhino really dropped the ball with this set. Buy the other two sets before investing in this.

by: Die Prinzen

Release Date October 05, 1992
After hearing one song from this CD, I bought the whole thing on a whim. I wasn't disappointed! As an advanced student of the German language, I really appreciated the clarity with which Die Prinzen sing - I was able to understand all of the words, which sometimes isn't even true for music in my native language! The songs were fun, with a lot of variety, and very catchy - easy to sing along with. Two thumbs up and I would recommend this to anyone who speaks English or German!

CD-Charts > Music > A Cappella
from: EMI / Angel Records

Release Date August 16, 1991
This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.

The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.

Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.

Other stand-outs are:

The-Half-of-It ... Read More:
