To those who are not familiar with Miss Piaf's singing soon will become fans of this woman. The recent bio-pic "La Vie en Rose" has stirred interest in those who had not heard her before. They will be richly rewarded with this album. My favorite track is "Non, je ne Regrette Rien".

Songs That Got Us Through WWII

This excellent album contains eighteen songs that were popular during the WW2 years. The album starts with that well-known hit Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (performed by The Andrews Sisters), and then moves between jazzy hits (such as G.I. Jive and Yours). I really enjoyed hearing again some of the songs that used to be so close to my father's heart, including Long Ago (And Far Away) and The White Cliffs of Dover.

I must say that I found this to be a very good album. I miss my GI father, who passed away a year ago, and I felt like I captured a little piece of him when I listened to the music he loved all those years ago. Listening to this double album of "American classical music" (which is what I call recitals of Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Rodgers and the like), I'm reminded of Frank Sinatra. And in turn I'm reminded of Bing Crosby's immortal quip regarding Sinatra: "Sinatra was a singer who comes along once in a lifetime. Why did it have to be my lifetime?"

Indeed - but not just Bing's. Since the passing of Sinatra (and Torme, IMO), there just hasn't been a male popular singer really to take up his (their) mantle. In the next generation you had Steve Tyrell and Harry Connick, Jr., but neither made it to that level, IMO.
