This is a bargain for the price, with GREAT sound quality! Warm, but also clear. The perfomances are great, specially the mazurkas and waltzes and sonatas. I thought the noctures where played a bit to "straight", but it depends what one compares it to. I prefer Cortot for about all the Chopin I've heard of him before 1934 (Although I like Rubinsteins sonata better) and brazilian G. Novaes for the nocturnes.

This is a masterful performance by the great Vladimir Ashkenazy of Chopin's favourite piano works. If you love Chopin's music and Ashkenazy's magic touch, this 2-disc CD is a must. Apart from all the all-time favourites such as grande valse brillante, op 18, nocturne in E flat major, op 9 no 2, Minute, Black Key, Military, Raindrop, Tristesse etc etc, it's interesting to note Ashkenazy's interpretation of Ballade in G minor, op 23 vis-a-vis Janusz Olejniczak playing it in the poignant scene of the award-winning Polanski's film "The Pianist" ie the piece played by Adrien Brody in his role as Szpilman, the Jewish pianist in hiding, to the German officer Hosenfeld. Enjoy!!

The recording is wonderful despite the noise, and the performance is masterful. But while the mp3 files contain information for each track (album, performer, title, opus, movement), there is no mention of the composers. Most of the pieces are popular enough it's obvious. But really, this is basic and should be a part of each file.

With Argerich you simply cannot go wrong in the world of piano.
There is so much passion, near recklessness and sheer power to rival even Liszt himself.
The Scherzo is so clean and maintains an unmatched pace throughout - yet be not deceived as some uncredibly sweet moments will catch you unaware.
The Toccata is truly devilish and one cannot comprehend how a human could reach such a tempo and yet hit all the required notes!!
The Jeux d'eau makes one wonder who might posesse all these pianistic abilities; from dreamy images to listless moments where languor is at hand, from the most fluid and yes, watery splashes to crystal clear melodies!
Finally, if for no other reason, you must have this Liszt Sonata! I have never heard any pianist ... Read More:

"Always pleasant, never a false cord." That's what I think each time I listen to this collection. I guess I should be listening more closely, but I find the music and the virtuosity with which it is played to be a springboard to other thoughts and activities. I can read with it in the background, write with it or simply drift into thought. And that is really quite enough for me.

Wonderful, right up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Seriously, mellow out and take a listen to this set, you'll hear how incredibly ethereal Faure's piano pieces are.
Release Date June 24, 1997
This is a great set to own to get a good feeling for the entirety
of Chopin's output. However, I feel (with appropriate respect to all
the other reviewers here) that one needs to dig a little deeper
for truly benchmark performances of these little miracles.
For example, try Demidenko for the Ballades and the third sonata,
check out Pollini for the Nocturnes and show Chiu a little love
for the Mazurkas and Etudes.

Five WONDERFUL Stars!! Award-winning virtuoso classical pianist Ingrid Fliter (FLEEter) has recorded a marvelous group of well-known Romantic pieces by Polish classical genius Frédéric Chopin. When one is dealing with such familiar musical territory, the interpreter must be on their 'A-game' and Ms Fliter, who grew up in a home where Chopin was heard and played often, has great mastery of this maestro's musical world. The Argentina-born pianist won the silver medal in the prestigious 2000 Chopin International Piano Competition (to Yundi Li's gold) and the prestigious (and lucrative) Gilmore Artist Award, which is awarded every four years to a pianist of "truly exceptional quality". Based on this performance and video performances that I have seen, she is worthy of ... Read More:

This is an ideal CD if you are looking for some "nice piano music" or want to explore the music of Fryderyk Chopin [1810-1849]. Chopin was born in Poland but lived most of his life in Paris among the glamorous, wealthy, aristocratic and artistic. Stories of his lavish life, beautiful female students and love affairs are legendary. Having few musical influences and minimal formal training, he developed a talent so unique that it seemed to appear out of no where. His love and complete dedication as a composer and musician was the piano which was the focal point of all his compositions.
But what made Chopin so famous was his abundent and unique solo piano music that has an almost universal appeal even today. His music was unlike anything heard before with ... Read More:
