World fusion music generally involves the merging into one piece of divergent types of music from different countries. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes not; in this case, it does because the two musics represented here, raga (Indian classical music) and Persian classical music, are from closely neighbouring regions of the world. In fact, it works beyond the musicians' wildest dreams. The Rain is an amazing performance very much in the tradition of Middle Eastern and South Asian music.
Kayhan Kalhor (a master kamancheh player) and Shujaat Husain Khan (a 7th-generation master raga musician) are joined on these three extended pieces by Sandeep Das on the tablas. My only complaint is that no lyrics are included for us to get an ... Read More:

I know nothing about traditional Persian music. I heard of this album through a friend of mine. I was hooked after the first listen.
Master Shahram Nazeri's vocals are so full of passion and conviction. He moves me each time I hear his voice. He has one of those truly unforgettable voices.
I ordered a copy of "The Passion of Rumi" with the expectation that I would like it,but was pleasantly surprised when I heard the entire album. After listening to it in its entirity, I fell in love with the muscial aspect of the album as well. The vocals and musical artistry are a perfect combination and complement.
I found myself listening to it over and over and loving it even more so the next time around.
This album is truly ... Read More:

This CD is to authentic world music what smooth jazz is to jazz. Somewhat palatable and skilled, while nearly devoid of soul and art.
Redeemed from a wholly negative review by the beautiful "Raindrops," which has everything the rest of the album lacks.
Release Date October 03, 2000
"Night Silence Desert" is a treasure - pure heaven to listen to. The exquisite spiritual beauty and true loving instrumental/vocal mastery of this work is a collector's item - one of the best in Persian music. For me, it reflects the timeless grace and delight of Persian art and culture. I can easily listen to this CD again and again.

it's maybe not as amazing as K. Kalhor's earlier solo work but it's a stunning album nevertheless. Intelligent, delicate without being bland or light.
Release Date February 14, 2006
The concert recorded on this disc has perhaps the most incredible composition I've ever heard, either in Persian or Western repertoire. Alizadeh's playing is incredible, and the duduk is a haunting and memorable addition. Some parts are very beautiful, others equally sad. The melodies will stay with you for a long time.

From listening to the brief music samples I'd hoped to find an instrumental album of authentic music. So often CDs that purport to be Middle Eastern music turn out to be rave mixes.
The good part? This is authentic. The downside? Husky-voiced vocals are prevalent throughout much of each track. When it comes to "world music" (or whatever they're calling it these days) the one thing that doesn't appeal to me is the vocals. Apart from that the music was enjoyable.
That's one thing I like about the Ravi Shankar albums I've owned or heard, if he's ever sung I haven't heard it.

A great band with great talent! Truly exceptional musicians who were brave enough to experiment outside the realms of Persian traditional classical music and bring the beautiful music, poetry and true spirit of Iran to the world! Afarin!
