Homayun jaan and Toryala jaan are both exceptional musicians and performers, respectively. Living in NorCal, we have the extra advantage of seeing these two live in concert. Check out the "Little Kabul" area of Fremont, CA., especially during the Nowrouz "new year" (March 21st), where there are many concerts and activities going on, possibly a concert featuring Homayun and Toryala.

An extremely intersting and valuable document. This music is the precursor of Indian Classical Music. This great master is i beleive the only great master of Rebab that has left us a modern recording. The recording is excellent and the music haunting and deep. If the preceding words have frightened you i must also add it is really enjoyable music though not for easy listening. Giorgio from italy

This is a great 2-disc set of field-recordings from 1968. Represented in this set are the musics of Tajik, Uzbek, Hazara, Pashtun, Herati, Kazakh, and Turkmen peoples.
There is a very nice sampling of styles and instruments, from lutes such as the dutar, tanbur, dambura, and dombra, to the sonorous bowed ghichak, to percussion and vocal styles.
There are a few tracks here from the brilliant ghichak player Baba Naim, who is one of the main musicians featured on the great Inside Afghanistan cd I reviewed some time ago. As well as a few tracks with the great zirbaghali (a drum) player Melang Nejrabi (or Malang Nejrovi, seen it both ways), who is also on Inside Afghanistan. Don't take this to mean that if you have one of ... Read More:

If you enjoy the likes of Talvin Singh, You would love this album. Trigana(remix), Dance tracks standout. But the rest are great as well.
Release Date November 21, 1995
A nice collection of "pre-troubled" Afghanistani music, recorded by the German WDR group in 1974, prior to the bulk of the political and religious upheaval that's taken place in the intervening decades. Thanks to the time frame of this recording, the traditions haven't been altered forcefully for the most part (though there are hints at Islamization of works from the Nuristani region). While the pieces hail from around the country, there is a focus on the Herat region and the region of Mazar-E-Sharif (where the works were recorded). The music itself runs the gamut from a simple, barely accompanied shepherd paean to full, harmonium-equipped ensembles backing up trios of singers. The highlight of the disc is the bareness of the music in many cases, which ... Read More:

This CD set is one of my two favorites; the other is the Desert Songs compilation by this same label. This very well recorded selection, brings you into the location and mindset of the various Musicians. The really nice presentation, with extensive liner notes, pictures and the sheer wealth and variety of sufi/mystic music from around the world, make this double CD set a thoughtful present for friends interested in esoteric music or Middle Eastern music. It is music to relax and meditate by, music to do your work and dream with. Highly recommended.
