Byron Lee has been around for a long time and has been able to adapt his style to the ever changing tastes and styles of music in the West Indies.
This disk is pure soca consisting mainly of covers of songs which were popular in the 1990's. I do lament the drum machine he employs but this is
an all too present feature in soca since it replaced its ancestor, calypso.
As always, Byron and the Dragonaires are flawlessly tight and for anyone lokking for a "greatest hits" of 90's soca this is a great disk.

The reviewer who called this album "bad, bad, bad" is wrong, wrong, wrong!
I own it and find it absolutely delightful. Why does he say: "Pan is not from Jamaica, but from Trinidad"? The album is entitled: Steel Drums of TRINIDAD! Not Jamaica. HELLO!!!!! And he wants people to go to another website and order steel band music that he recommends. Why bother? This recording may not be as new or as "trendy" as he would like, but who cares? This is an older album, recorded before digital sound, but the music is great. No background noise, great playing, lots of spirit. And it's certainly not out of tune. I sure don't hear any clinkers or off notes on this cd. Just good traditional steel band music at a reasonable price.

Soca is one of the main sounds here in bermuda and when Byron Lee comes down here every summer I never miss a concert! His music is so up beat and fun and the tunes are catchy! I'm so glad I was raised a Bermudian - I love this stuff! He can take any song (ie My Love is your Love by whitney Houston) and turn it into a soca hit. I love him!

There is no other score to give this collection but all 5 stars. If you ever wondered what happened to Eddie Grant after Electric Avenue, he owns the company that has been putting out these CD collections of Kitchener and Sparrow. Some of the songs here are not reflected on any of those other CD's. So scoop this one.
Monster hits like Jean and Dinah featured in the film Mystic Masseur and the elegant Margie are here. But the all time champion Calypso on here must be Sa Sa Yea. While Sparrow is known internationally for his smooth voice and provocative lyrics, Lord Kitchener was always more respected in Trinidad for his cleverly camouflaged double entendres and rich musical compositions...compositions that always took the orchestral needs of ... As a fledgling calypso fan who'd only been exposed to vintage recordings (1920's-1950's), this album was a revelation for me. I came to calypso music (oddly enough) through two recordings by Van Dyke Parks, "Discover America" and "Clang of the Yankee Reaper". His enthusiasm for the genre was contagious, and led me to a number of early calypso collections, namely "Roosevelt in Trinidad" (which features versions of some of the songs from "Discover America"), and "Calypso Awakening" - my first exposure to the Mighty Sparrow. Being well aware that this was a Mighty Sparrow album produced by Van Dyke Parks, I knew I could do no wrong in making the purchase. I don't mean to brag, but I was right.

Jamaica Ska & Other Jamaican Party Anthems

If SKA ever had a place in the ultimate bachelor pad...this CD carved that place out. While this is certainly not core SKA for the baldies to bounce around too, it is enjoyable. Some great surprises on the CD are the cover of "Express yourself" and Toots singing on "She Will Never Let Me Down". Eric "Monty" Morris makes a bunch of appearances...all in all, worth the money I spent (Heck, their version of "Nice Time is almost as good as P. Dillon's and Jamaica Ska is worth the dough on it's own).
Can't claim to know the history of the band, but I imagine them playing in matching white dinner jackets for tourists (a testament to how polished they are). While not as inspiring as Jimmy Cliff belting out "Dearest Beverly" in an ice-cream parlor, ... Read More:
