I have about 50 Putumayo compilations in my collection and this CD is absolutely the best of the entire lot. There is not a bad track on the disc. It is the epitome of feel-good music, highly listenable and danceable. While every song is outstanding, the favorite track in my household is #8 Kanpe Sou Yon Bit. Do we know what it means? Not a clue; but if you really want to check it out, the liner notes in all Putumayo compilations are informative and comprehensive. Whether you're a casual fan of world music or you want to add to a growing collection, French Caribbean is a wise purchase. Highly recommended.

I just adore this CD, even though I am not normally an aficionado of this kind of music. The beat is very infectious, and each song is a new delight. I'd give it six stars if I could!

I'm going to have to come in on the side of this CD. It's an excellent selection of sacred music from some of the Haitian traditions. As long as we don't take it to be encyclopedic, there's no problem here. Some of the recordings are old, and all are set into their proper context by the notes.

This album is a must have in the collection of every music collector just like bob marley's legend iS.You might not like reggae but u must have this Legend Album. You might not like haitian roots music. But you have to get this album. This is the best ROOTS album ever released in haiti. The cd booklet is great. THE MUSIC IS BEAUTIFUL !

I've been a fan of Haitian music for years...when this album came out it spelled the end of the urbane Kompa music that had dominated the haitian music scene for decades. The songs are long and based on traditional rara beats from the voudoun religion brought over from West Africa. This is Hatian roots ("racines") music and once you hear it you will be hooked. Songs here like Ke'm pa sote and Se Kreyol Nou Ye revived Haitian music and culture by simply revelling in it. Gone was the slick production of the Kompa records and the allure of cosmopolitan expatriation, Boukman Eksperyans with Voudou Adjae created a new earthy, natural and (unavoidably) political brew. The rhythms are infectious, the melodies are sublime, the lyrics poignent and the ... Read More:

Spiritual, political, social needs and ingenious music combine to create musical ambrosia. It makes a lovely companion to "The Serpant and the Rainbow" which is a fascinating study into Haitian Vodoun. As an interesting side note, I will add that I was introduced to both of these by a fellow reviewer, Kevin L. Nenstiel.
Release Date June 01, 1999
This is the perfect introduction to Haitian music this CD covers all genres and spans a few generations. The choice of music and bands is exellent.

Boukman take their name from a slave leader who led the revolution against the French colonists which ended in 1804 with the former slaves victoriously forming the first Black republic in the world. Boukman Eksperyans spread their message throughout the world with their artful blend of traditional Haitian rhythms with rock, reggae, and Caribbean sounds.
The past few years Boukman Eksperyans have appeared on the popular African Fete tour, where I got to see them preform. The tour also included other giant international stars like Oumou Sangare, Femi Kuti, and Baba Maal.
All I can tell you folks is that this is the best band in the world. There could be no better representative of Haitian music than Boukman Eksperyans. The group ... Read More:
