Amr Diab is legendary in the Maghreb. His music is omnipresent, and never seems to grow old. Fresh, exotic, stimulating, both danceable and listenable, I couldn't recommend it more highly. Millions worldwide would agree! My favourite tracks: Awedony (a HUGE hit in the late 90's), Tamally Maak, and Nour El Ain. Buy this CD and find out for yourself!

For anyone unfamiliar with Arab and Middle East culture, Umm Kulthum can only be described as a phenomenon like Edith Piaf, a singer from humble origins who captured the hearts and minds of millions with her voice and her song. I loved Arabesque and Arabian Travels, but this is not trance. This is more like Arabian pop music. The vocals are irritating to me. Sting even shows up on one track. If you are looking for world trance, or something to chill out or relax to, forget this one.

I was looking for 'call to prayer' type of works from the middle east. When I was in Istanbul I enjoyed waking to the 'call to prayer' each day. Unfortunately, the gamble on this CD did not get the results I was looking for. I would recommend sampling with all the CD's in the World section unless you are familiar with them. Unfortunately, Amazon appears not to offer that service with any reliability.

I love this collection of ballads by Oum Kalthoum. It reads like divine poetry sung by a muezzin. Most of these songs are lovesongs, but the lyrics are beautiful and classic, and her voice is as bright as the cardinal heart bleeding across a canopy of crystalline irises. Her voice weeps with regret and humility...like a bedouin wailing at the stars. The accompaniment accentuates her desert voice in their subtlety, a great partnership.

The music is very upbeat and contemporary in feel. Very young at heart and modern in its production values. Not a lot of variation in tempo and not for those wanting traditional Egyptian songs. Suitable for those wanting a taste of youthful Egyptian Pop.
