I have listened to this cd several times now, and have enjoyed it every time. The songs are generally traditional, and I can hear touches of The Chieftains and The Fureys in the arrangements and voices, which for me, makes it all the more enjoyable. The High Kings are proof that you don't need to have real fancy arrangements to make a song come alive - just a lot of talent and heart. I went back and listened to some old cds with similar songs (some the same), and they were nowhere near as good. I would definitely recommend this cd to anyone who likes traditional Irish (and some Scottish) music.

After the Hard and the Easy and a very welcome return to the salt, sea and shores of Newfoundland found in those playful and traditional style songs by the greatest band on earth, I was a little put off by my first few listens to this newest effort. The songs sound good and are well produced but I was a little bored about half way through by, what seemed to me, to be lots of the same old thing. I know it is in vogue to recycle these days, but not when it comes to music. I'm still not sure after a few more listens if this is a good album or not, but I don't hate it as much as I thought I would.
The Bad: Too many attempts at "rock" songs. "Life is Beautiful" is the only GBS cd I don't own and there is a very good reason for that. The guys ... Read More:

This DVD shows with visual backdrops the genuine folk music on stage. A collection of remarkably talented musicians who feel the music. The audience/viewer moves into their world. The last cut, "The Parting Glass," becomes, for me, a universal metaphor. Transcendent.

I am a BIG Solas fan. Great musicians, wonderful people.
I've followed them, now, through 3 changes in lead singers. Each time it took awhile to get used to the new "voice" in the mix.The album itself is great. It's not just another "same old, same old" next album that you find with so many other groups. Very enjoyable.

I have listened this musician several times. Then i decided to have this album. In my opinion, these songs have their own pleasure completely. So this is an effective experince to listen them.

So much to hear, The Pogues put together one very worthwhile box set. Many b-sides, out-takes, and rarities, that leave even the biggest fan wondering "why have i not heard this before?" Good sound quality on majority of tracks, some demo tracks are not of highest quality, but it's fine, because it's the Pogues!
5 disc set, in beautiful packaging with outstanding written history, and interesting facts about each recording.
Personal favorites include: the "nice" version of Boys From The County Hell, Haunted [lead vocals by Cait O'Riordan], Maggie Mae, and a slew of great instrumentals.
If Shane could stay on his feet, he too would dance all night long.

I'm familiar with some of Kate Rusby's earlier music because she gets airplay, from time to time, on BBC radio folk music programmes - but this is her only album that I have. 'Awkward Annie' seems to follow an established pattern - a seamless mix of self-penned original songs and traditional songs from the British Isles.
THE VOCALS : KR's voice is difficult to describe (but I'll try). If you took away the American accent and country twang from Dolly Parton's vocals, and replaced it with a decidedly Yorkshire-English accent, you'd get something which comes close to KR's vocal style (listen to how she pronounces words like 'come', 'money', or 'love'). Depending upon the song, her vocals oscillate between dainty delicacy and haunting poignancy. ... Read More:

before you buy be aware this is not the same Celtic Thunder as the 2008 group. Their CD and DVD is delightful. This 1988group, while interesting is rather old fashioned and amateurish sounding. It has that sound of The Early Elvis Recordings. You may like it and it is Irish music.Just a caution so you (unlike me ) know what you are buying

This was a recommendation made by Amazon, based on another purchase I'd made, and I am throughly pleased. It was a worthy addition to my music collection.
