Ry's unexpected trilogy has produced his best work since the 'holy trinity' of the early 70s - Into the Purple Valley/Boomer's Story/Paradise & Lunch.
His literary talents are a real surprise: the book and lyrics are hilarious, moving and very subtle. Twenty years from now they'll be writing theses and trying to track down all the allusions and o-mages. And his voice has never sounded better - at an age when most are paring back the material to suit a reduced vocal range, Ry has found notes he never had before.
The previous one (My Name is Buddy) was very good. This is simply great.

So some of the songs are truncated. I don't care! Country music is not a genre with a definite pattern in the composition like concerti and symphonies. It was difficult to get all those 50 hits on two discs, and I appreciate the effort.
When I'm riding down the road and listening to George Strait, I enjoy his own unique style with a hint of the rhythm that Johnny Cash used and a big dose of the melancholy that made us all love George Jones. Then I hear some novelty country Western tune from back in the 1980's, and I'm smiling again.
George Strait is the kind of male singer that makes a woman feel good. When we women listen to him, we can think about the men in our lives. His songs convey an appreciation and love for ... Read More:

It takes courage to release a concept album, and something close to mad faith in one's art to release three in succession, as Ry Cooder has.
The concept album is usually an accident waiting to happen, so Ry Cooder is pushing his luck making three in a row.
"I, Flathead" is the concluding part of his 'California Trilogy', following 2005's "Chavez Ravine" and last year's "My Name Is Buddy", and it's a tribute to Cooder's talents that it's a match for either.
More than four decades since he emerged as an electric blues guitarist so highly rated that he turned down an offer to join the Rolling Stones when they looked for a replacement for Brian Jones in the Sixties, Cooder has ploughed a less commercial but hugely rewarding furrow as ... Read More:

As this was my first George Strait purchase, it will certainly not be my last. The disc is recorded very well. One of the best recordings I have ever heard. With 15 tracks, there is plenty to listen to. My kind of woman is the best one on the album. Overall, this album is better than Troubadour.

I have seen Merle in person and recommend EVERYONE to do the same. Wow!!! If only I could go back to the 80's and do it all over again.!!

I recently heard the group at a concert at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and was impressed, this album does not contain any of their humor and just concentrates on the "classics". Great western music with none of the country whine...

With Tony Brown at the helm, what could have been a fabulous country album turned into a pop-sounding, over-hyped album, that tried (and succeeded) to increase George Strait's popularity to the masses. I love the movie, don't get me wrong, but the music is not the George Strait who was always so true to his western swing and honkytonk roots. Tony Brown took every Strait album afterward and did the same thing; taking away from the crooner's extreme vocal talent, and inserting mainstream sound (via posers like Garth Brooks, and later - Tim McGraw). I still love George's songs, but I prefer music from "Strait Country" until "Holding my Own".
Oh, by the way, George Strait and Alan Jackson's duet "Murder on Music Row" should have included Tony ... Read More:

I bought this CD, and also another, to gather most of the older, and his later too, songs which caused me to become a Marty Robbins fan, per se'... I like the western trilogy songs like El Paso and Faleena, etc., but really enjoy the songs such as Honky Tonk Man and Some Memories, etc., as well... And who could forget Padre... Just another purchase I made to which I was very happy with... Thanks!
