I wanted a good collection of Kenny Rogers music to use for my DJ service. The only disc that I had was full of lousy re-recordings. In my mind, if they are not the original recordings that actually became hits, then they are worthless to me. I read all of the mixed reviews here on Amazon regarding this collection, but decided to take a risk and purchase it. I have listened to the full collection 3 times in full. Many reviewers are saying that this collection is full of re-recordings, but that is not true. These ARE the original hit recordings. This is a great, quality collection. Yes, the first 5 tracks are Kenny Rogers & The First Edition- but the package states that they are. Besides, he made those particular songs hits when he WAS with ... Read More:

Don Williams, a.k.a. "The Gentle Giant", has been writing and singing his mellow country songs since the 1960s. The Definitive Collection goes back to 1973's Come Early Morning and ends with Heartbeat In The Darkness from 1986. This time period and the songs on this collection are the heart and soul of Williams' successful career.
The Don Williams sound is smooth, rich and mellow, but it's also authentically wise and kindly rugged. He's tall and considerate, just as his nickname implies, but he's also famous for his old worn leather hat and friendly bearded face. Don's singing voice and demeaner are as laid-back as Andy and Aunt Bee sittin' on the front porch while sippin' iced tea on a pleasant summer night. The songs are humble and simple, ... Read More:

The movie was one of John Travolta's best and it is great to hear all of those songs on one CD. It's a shame that Gilley's is no more.
Release Date February 04, 1992
I have a couple Marty Robbins CDs. This one is my favorite. Really enjoy the collection of songs. Would recommend this CD without hesitation.
Release Date September 21, 1993
Sure, the songs don't age well, but they were never meant to. This is a period piece and should be appreciated as such. It's beautiful '70s country orchestra craftsmanship and great spoken-word lyrics with awesome comic timing. Extra points for songs that were so prescient about environmentalism and the disappearance of open space, like "There Won't Be No Country Music", though WOLF CREEK PASS's "Old 30" and "Glenwood Canyon" hit that note even better -- just part of the reason it's such a shame that album's out of print/unavailable on CD. I grew up on WCP and still have it on tape. It's his first album and for my money it's still the best -- stark & evocative, far less slick & repetitive than a lot of these post-Convoy songs, which get bogged down fast ... Read More:

One thing you need to do is buy this box-set and the next thing you need to do is listen to it and be absolutely astound with the lyrics and just how great this collection this is. You will NOT be disappointed. I guarantee it!

There are some truly haunting performances here, and some funny ones, and some of everything, really. This stuff is so far deeper and weirder and spookier than any folk I've ever heard. It's the motherlode; Harry Smith wandered around and got these recordings before radio started, and thus we get true folk music, passed down the generations and from that area, or from the motherland of the musicians, with the spirit of the New World.
The vibes are palpable, varied, and intense. Lots of "mistakes", but so much feeling that missed notes only add to the experience.
If you've ever liked any folk music at all, whether Leadbelly, the Seegers, the Carter family, early Dylan, or if you need to know where real country music comes from, this is your collection.

I wasn't very thrilled with this CD. I like upbeat and traditional music, even when it's a variety version, but this didn't fit the bill. This CD is very slow and I only really like one song. I'm a huge fan of Alabama but this one had to go.
