Finally, New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo has released their first real album. While fans have been able to hear Bret and Jemaine's highly entertaining brand of humor on HBO and live albums, Flight of the Conchords is their first full-length record.
While there's something to be said for Flight of the Conchords' live records and actual concerts, which is one of the funniest things I have been privileged to attend, their debut album does manage to translate a good portion of their irreverent humor into the studio. The songs, as usual, don't disappoint, running the gamut from anti-war sex anthem "Ladies of the World" to the funky bedtime jam that Marvin Gaye has tried so hard ... Read More:

Flight of the Conchords should have done a little more brainstorming when trying to come up with things to sing about. This disc has five songs, and two of them are about sex. The opening track, "Business Time," is a rhythm-driven slow jam with the singer breathily monologuing about having sex with his wife/girlfriend... not a very welcoming way to start off your very first disc release. We move on to "If You're Into It," and hey, more sex! This time, the singer is encouraging a girl to have sex with some other guy.
Once you get past those two, the rest of the disc is very good. "I'm Not Crying" is, without a doubt, the best Conchords song yet. The subtle ironies and slight jabs at psychological denial of a lover's rejection are absolutely ... Read More:

it's got a *bit* too much comedy/dialogue in it for me, but i really like it. doesn't get old fast, can listen to it a lot. wish there was a bit more music but it's still darn good.

People always say Jack Black and the D are hilarious, but you dont really know either of them until you've seen this dvd. This is Tenacious D at their best. The concert, the show, the skits, all are funny as hell. The Complete MasterWorks is totally worth buying.

This compilation DVD is hilarious. It's great on so many levels. As an adult, I remember all the original songs that Weird Al parodied; and that makes it even funnier. My five year old saw "like a surgeon" on totally 80's vh1 classic and thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen - and he has no idea who Madonna is! I bought this DVD with him in mind - and he watches it over and over and over. I have Weird Al on karaoke, my son can't read, but he can sing every word in "fat". My seven year old daughter enjoys it as well; as do my husband and myself. We got our money's worth on this one!

After the mediocre "Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah" and the slightly better "Love Their Country", I was starting to think that the Gimme Gimme's had lost their touch. I am happy to say that I was wrong because " Have Another Ball!" is a great CD. The only tracks that aren't good are the terrible "Sodomy" and the so-so "The Harder They Come". I only hope their next release is this good.

This guy has such a great sense of humor. And this DVD gives everyone a very good first impression of Stephens talent. Untill he will have his first concert in Germany (Hamburg, I hope!!!), this DVD is my substitute.

There are a couple songs that may take some time to win you over (I'm thinking of "Pancreas" and "Weasel Stomping Day" in particular) but even so, this is a fairly solid album from the paragon of parody. It's not the instant classic that some of his other albums were (such as "Even Worse" or "Off the Deep End") but it does eventually work its way under your skin. You'll find yourself humming sections of "Trapped In The Drive-Thru" while you're waiting "at the pay window, ... or whatever you call it."
The videos on the second disc are quite odd. Al is attempting to encourage independent creativity by having a number of different people make their own version of music video based on his songs. Some play out better than others, but they all ... Read More:

Zappa had his first real commercial success with his previous album "Overnight Sensation" and "Apostrophe" would follow up with more novelty songs, especially "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" which would actually garner him a significant amount of radio airplay. This is another album that gets mixed reviews from the Zappa faithful. Some loath it and yet it was Zappa's highest charting studio album and from a sales standpoint was probably the high water mark of his career. I like most of the tracks here especially the instrumental stuff which features Zappa at his best on guitar. I don't claim to be an expert on Zappa so I don't know how this compares to a lot of his material, but suffice to say it is a strong release and would probably be a good place to start ... Read More:
