Considering the fact that I no longer pass my days in my native lands, for me, a viewing of Sigur Ros's film "Heima," a documentary about the groups return home to Iceland after a year-long long tour abroad, inspired in me an onslaught of personal nostalgia and introspective reflection. The combo of the indubitably beautiful music and landscapes, along with the quirky idiosyncrasies that characterize the Icelandic brood, make one personally investigate the sentiment that comes along with having a "home". However, be warned... although they DO speak English throughout the film , I recommend hiring English subtitles due to the nearly incomprehensible English spoken by the band... But no worries, it's mystic and cute....

I see from many other reviews here that the "pretentious" part of the discussion has been covered in (occasionally cutthroat) detail. I'll skip it and go straight to the album.

I freely admit that I'm a music nerd. Obscure languages don't put me off. Long tracks with no discernible structure? No problem. And yet I _still_ had to work in earnest to figure out anything on this album other than "Staralfur." This is thick, opaque, inscrutable stuff. It doesn't stand up well at all to casual listening.

If you can give the album several close listens, however -- and if the unsettling edge to the preteen-sounding, sunlight-deprived vocals doesn't put you off completely -- it's worth investing the time to get to know the ... Read More:

The first time I put this disc in the player, I was driving home after work (I purchased this album on my lunch break). I had no idea what was in store for me.

The climax of Glosoli brought me to tears.

It was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I'd ever heard, and a mix of the intensity of the playing and the brilliance of the arrangement was simply too much for me to handle -- I couldn't help but cry.

It was the first time a song outside of the classical music realm actually made me cry because of the music alone -- certain lyrics have been known to affect me that way emotionally, but not a raw musical performance by a traditional guitar, bass, keys, drums band.

This album is a delight. This band is so original and so unpredictable that their music is always a surprise, and Hvarf/Heim is no exception. On one disc are polished studio recordings of several of Sigur Ros' most requested songs, and on the other disc are rare live cuts rich with acoustic detail. I don't speak Icelandic, so the words are lost on me, but the music speaks for itself. Their extremely moving song "Von" (Hope) is on both discs so we get to hear it both live and produced. Both versions soar with emotion, as the music moves from bright to dark like a stormy sky. I'm glad I bought it.

I have been waiting for this release and hoping that wolfgang voigt would remaster in my opinion some of the best ambient music on earth. This is Zauberberg,Konigsforst,Pop,and the self titled Gas releases in a cardboard box with sleeves for cases along with four case sized art prints of the cover with different shades of color. If you like what you hear on the samples you wont be dissapointed with the nice quality these cds give you. I listen to GAS music daily that is how good it is in my opinion. Wolfgang Voigt is trully a gifted artist and most anything on Kompakt label is good so check out their website and go to mp3s to hear samples. Take advantage of this while you can buy this now its a bargan!

I bought the CD after hearing only one of the songs. I figured the rest of the CD probably wasn't as good but I was wrong! They are all good songs and my family and I are really enjoying them. Even my kids (10 and 7) like them!

I have never heard of these guys except by name. Until i bought this CD. And I ended up buying it out of curiosity. This reminds me a bit of... well I'm not sure what to say. They have a very unique sound that no one can define. And that is good if you are looking for something to stand out. And these guys definitely do. Lyrically, they have an unusual way they look at things, I guess. I have to get used to their sound. But I recommend this if you are looking for something different.
