This is an extremely talented young woman. Her writing is interesting, her bass sound is rich and strong and her voice is enchanting. The music doesn't really swing. It is not bebop at all. There is a very nice 5/4 arrangement of Body and Soul en Espanol. Hip Latin rhythms and unusual forms make this an extraordinary recording. She is a soulful, sincere musician, and although this is a little on the pop side for my personal taste, there is some serious musical value.
Good recording makes it very listenable.

I dabbled in jazz for about 10 years, then bought this disk on its reputation as a seminal album and good for "newbies"- After many many listens, its probably my number one favorite of all time, any genre. The mood is mellow, the structures are simple, but the whole thing is more than the sum of its parts- sublime in the old sense of the word- intelligent, interesting, masterful improvisation by all players. Miles is the man and this IMHO is the album.

Miles Davis passed away in 1991, but his majesty has lived on through any number of reissues, boxed sets of classic sessions and the reinterpretation of his music in a variety of settings.

This set - placing Miles in a World Music context - is sweeping in scoop and breathtaking in sound. The project was overseen by producer Bob Belden and co-arranged by Louiz Banks, who also performed on keyboards.

Utilizing classical and jazz artists from India and musicians who mostly performed with Miles during his "electric" years, the 12 numbers - which include In a Spanish Key, Silent Way, Jean Pierre and Miles Runs the Voodoo Down - are powerfully presented on an illuminated landscape that subtly changes with each listening.

Wonderful and relaxing music. Very soft, wonderful sound tracks. There are two soundtracks of "The Girl From Ipanema," with the first being the ultimate recording. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys cool jazz or any relaxing International-style music.

Yes Pat is the best guitar player in the world,he is a great master,composer,arranger a GREAT Musician.I saw him live at the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz fest this june'08 with the band,McBride on bass,and Sanchez on drums,the whole crowd were out of words after his performance.The best record No Doubt.

The pieces of music on this album were done by a professional bunch of folk who for some time have been going on in a certain direction. It's the first Frisell album I ever bought, so I can't say much about the guy's past. Anyawy, most pieces on this album are sad. Some of them are repetitive and boring. Few have interesting compositions. All in all it's a pleasant affair. It's the kind of music some people would want to listen to sitting in an old rocking chair and looking at the post-sunsent with a glass of fine Cognac on the side, thinking about nothing in particular.

If anyone ever wanted to know what Julian Cannonball Adderly is all about, go no further than track one of this album. He leaves it all on the table on Autumn Leaves. His solo there is so intense and emotion filled that it leaves you breathless.

Miles takes a back seat to Cannonball, but not because its Cannonball's gig, but because Cannonball's playing has no end to its emotional depth. It is a cliché to say it, but it is simply something else, period. And Hank Jones piano playing cannot be improved upon. It is exquisitely precise and the chords he drops makes the spine tingle. This is a good album, period.

Birth of the Cool

When you realize that these sides were cut in 1949, you can only but marvel at the both the sophistication of both the music and the sound. For those of you that might think that anything recorded almost 60 years ago must sound primitive, think again. This is modern music, timeless music, and will pay dividends on a good sound system. How many 58 year old recording can say that?

This is great stuff, period.
