The original "Piano Starts Here" album has been my favorite for many years, or rather - decades. It was plagued by tape hiss, cracking, flat tuning due to stretching of the original master and so on. Every time I'd listen to it I was wondering how wonderful it must've been to hear Art Tatum live, without all these problems of an old recording. But then, I was grateful that anything was preserved at all. Those recordings were 70 years old after all.

And then Zenph studio did the impossible: they managed to extract all the information from the original recording, way beyond capabilities of today's MIDI standard, and then re-performed it at the place where the original performance took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. I know people revere Boult and Handley and Hickox as the best of all possible interpreters for British music, along with Groves and Barbirolli and all of the other artists presented here. So please don't take offense as I pick apart this box set -- because it's not as great as some other reviewers make it out to be. Others can tell you why it's good (and it has LOTS of good stuff). Let me criticize it a little. Or a lot.

First, the packaging. I'm getting really tired of these box sets (Elgar on EMI, reissue of Stravinsky set on Sony, etc.) that are missing biographies or descriptions of the works outside of a track listing. Is it so hard to reprint the liner notes from the original releases? Why on earth do they not include a libretto?? ... Read More:

From This Moment On is a fine Diana Krall album that again features her marvelous singing with great musical arrangements. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very tastefully done as well.

The CD starts with Diana doing a sublime job on "It Could Happen To You;" she aces this easily and she never skips a beat! Her voice is in excellent form and she is able to successfully pull in her listeners with the heartfelt feeling she puts into this ballad. "Isn't This A Lovely Day" features Diana squarely front and center--right where she belongs! Diana's voice is clearly able to infuse this tune with great emotion and that impresses me greatly. The piano arrangement is also very elegant. I really like "Isn't This Is A Lovely Day."

The Definitive Collection

Even though I given this a Five Star rating, I know that not everyone has the capacity to like Satchmo. However, for those music lovers who love the blues, love classics, and love pioneers of great music, this is an awesome collection from a great artist.

The majority of adults that I know have heard "What a Wonderful World". Even if it was a remake version, it is a great song.

His duet with Bing Crosby, "Gone Fishin'", is one of my favorite summer songs.

Speaking of summer,"When it's Sleepytime Down South.', is a wonderfully relaxing addition as a live cut.

Classic versions of, "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Cabaret", and :Hello Dolly" add incredible excitement.
