Some of the tracks on this splendid, reasonably priced 2 CD-set could peel paint off road signs. Self-taught, unable to read a note of music, Stevie Ray Vaughan displays technical virtuosity that at times seems almost Faustian, it's hard to believe that what you're hearing is even possible. Most of all, SRV is a complete Texas blues package, his singing is excellent, his command of the blues idiom so total one imagines he must have dreamt blues as well as lived them - everything works, right down to the outfits and soul patch.

Concert one July 17, 1982, the line-up is Stevie Ray on electric guitar and vocals, Tommy Shannon on bass and Chris Layton on the drums. (This was before they added a keyboard player). The name of this album should be "I Am the Greatest!" because that is what this album is for Stevie Ray. Any blues/rock lover will absolutely wear this CD out because it is the vary essence of SRV music. The only CD left to buy is his Live at Austin City Limits, his best performance ever in my opinion!

Broken Lands

Indigenous continues to climb my "favorites" list when it comes to music. This album is a little more low key than Chasing the Sun -- trust me, not a bad thing. Broken Lands is a really good album that stands on it's own. It's the same blues and feel that defines Indigenous, but it's looking in a different direction this time around.

To call Chris Duarte one of the best guitar players walking the planet would not be an exaggeration. That would, however, be selling him short. Chris has been making fine quality albums for a number of years now. Always with solid song writing, good production, and fine backing from some tremendous musicians. All of these things are in play with Vantage Point. What has become more obvious is the increased range and power of Duarte's voice. Stevie Ray Vaughan and his music has accompanied me for a significant portion of my life. I'm certain many of us can say that. It wouldn't have been the same without him. I remember one time, looking over at my best friend dancing on my coffee table...

I also miss the El Mocambo that I knew; that small, cheesy, unpretentious blues and rock club that insisted on decrying any temptation to adopt the latest music fashion or decor. I enjoyed many beers there over the years, as have many much more famous than me.

This DVD's marriage between two hallowed institutions now gone is a fitting one. It doesn't have to be the best sound; it just has to be the best. And it is.

Thanks Stevie. We miss you.

Live Bootleg Series, Volume Two

More great live music from the real king of texas blues. This material is killer. BUT, when they say bootleg, they mean it... The mix sounds if taken from a sound board and maybe ran thru a sound enhancer. Not sure if it is just my cd, but the treble is way up -sounding like it is maxed out to hide the hiss. You have to turn it down -which on my car deck is a pain. But then again, you have to take the bad with the good when it comes to a legend like Johnny Winter. If you are like me, you will buy everything he puts out -and relish it. Which is exactly what I do - and you should too. They do not make them like Johnny Winter anymore. There are some truly haunting performances here, and some funny ones, and some of everything, really. This stuff is so far deeper and weirder and spookier than any folk I've ever heard. It's the motherlode; Harry Smith wandered around and got these recordings before radio started, and thus we get true folk music, passed down the generations and from that area, or from the motherland of the musicians, with the spirit of the New World.
The vibes are palpable, varied, and intense. Lots of "mistakes", but so much feeling that missed notes only add to the experience.
If you've ever liked any folk music at all, whether Leadbelly, the Seegers, the Carter family, early Dylan, or if you need to know where real country music comes from, this is your collection.
