The Stand Ins

by: Okkervil River

Release Date September 09, 2008
Great album. "Singer Songwriter," "Pop Lies," and (the single) "Lost Coastlines" are three of the best songs I've heard this year. There is something so interesting about Will Sheff's song writing style and vocal stylings. I find the "Stand Ins" instrumental tracks sort of awkward. "Blue Tulips" and "Bruce Wayne" are definitely not two of my favorite songs. But all is forgotten because the other songs are so strong and unique. Okkervil River is definitely one of those bands more people should know about...

The Reminder

Release Date May 01, 2007
I actually purchased this for a friend before I bought it for myself. I admit, I discovered her once I looked up that catchy song from the iPod commercials. I sampled the songs and didn't find them to be anything special- but once I listened to the entire CD, I fell in love with it. It's a feel good CD, and definitely a great CD to sing along with. My favorite song being "The Limit to Your Love."

pretty bored with this album. this is a band I thought could do no wrong. love the trappers and Im not just talking about wild mountain nation. sub pop + great band = boring band stripped of personality. seriously, 'not your lover' may have well been written by bon jovi and richie sambora. bring back the trappers i love. sorry early, this shiite don't fly.

An interesting style with many catchy rhythms and melodies. She can get a bit repetitive at times, but overall, still very nice and refreshing.

As somebody else wrote, this has been done a lot of times before. It is extremely derivative 60's influenced guitar pop that is not that great but also not that bad. Actually quite faceless and bland.

Let It Die

CD-Charts > Music > Lo-Fi
by: Feist

Release Date April 26, 2005
When I bought this album 2 years ago I immediately latched onto it like a long lost friend. I found that I couldn't put it down and it became something that I used to help me get through bad times, stressful times, times when I just needed to chill out and forget about life for an hour.

I still listen to it on a weekly basis to this day.

There are few works of art in music which are as sublimely beautiful as this. Feist has been blessed with one of the purest, most beautiful voices is music and she imparts her delivery with a cool, detached demeanor which is very seductive.

Although her sound is unique to herself, the vibe that her music gives off is very reminiscent (to me) of one of my favorite all time singers..Sade. ... Read More:

by: Modest Mouse

Release Date April 06, 2004
i will admit it. this was my first modest mouse cd. i had heard "float on" on the radio, or something and liked the name of the band, so i figured "why not?" the art was interesting, there was a solid single in circulation, i had heard good things...
i popped in the disc, listened to it a couple of times. i liked the first couple of tracks. especially float on [to this day, its still a great song.] all the way up to the track "bury me with it" [which is actually an amazing song.]
but all in all...i didnt actually like the cd. nothing really struck my interest.
anyway, that was then.
i believe this came out around 2004. after coming back to it a few times, here we are in 2008, and i am madly in love with modest mouse. i have slowly been building ... Read More:

Our Endless Numbered Days

Release Date March 23, 2004
I thoroughly enjoyed Samuel Beam's style and artistry but the mix on the CD itself left something to be desired. I'm unsure if this was one of his "home mixed" recordings but the CD quality could use a little polish. (It was necessary to seriously tweak my settings to get the sound I wanted to hear.)However, the artist's style was very enjoyable and the lyrics held my interest with their message.
I will definitely check out some of his more recent works in search of a more enjoyable sound mix.

CD-Charts Music : The Stage Names

The Stage Names

CD-Charts > Music > Lo-Fi
by: Okkervil River

Release Date August 07, 2007
I know that these guys were one of the indie darlings in 2007 but I didn't get into this album until 2008. However, I am glad that I did. The album is a great mix of songs of varying tempos, and the 9 songs on it feel like just the right amount.

The first two songs are really great up-tempo numbers, with the second song, Unless Its Kicks, the real highlight of the album. The lyrics are fantastic, with each song telling a unique story and repetitive lyrics and choruses typically avoided. The writing is very clever this way as it really sounds more like stories rather than the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus routine.

The slower songs are great as well. Savannah Smiles is a song about reading his daughter's diary and lamenting the innocence lost ... Read More:
