Once in My life (the 90's to be accurate) I listened to nothing but hip-hop. That period is over a long while ago, and lot's of the albums I owned I couldn't listen to ever again! One of the great exceptions is the debut of Wu-Tang Clan, that really holds up well more than ten years later. What I really liked about their music, and still does, is not only their quirky idea of sampling sound-bits from chop-sockey films. It was even more their minimalistic, raw and kinda gritty sound. Most of the tracks were made of only one small sample and a drum beat. And all of the rappers are good, and could deliver some surprising kicking lyric. Check tracks like 'Tearz', 'Protect Ya Neck' and 'Clan in Da Front', that's it! Just forget the latest flops from ... Read More:

The 2nd album from A Tribe Called Quest, The Low End Theory is definitely their best album as well one of the greatest albums to come from the East Coast. One of the reasons for that is this album combindes both hip hop and jazz perfectly, especially since jazz bassist Ron Carter is featured on here. Another reason why its a classic album is because of the lyrical ability of Q Tip and Phife Dawg. Phife especially showcases his skils as an mc. The subject matter is also more serious than their debut. On The Low End Theory, ATCQ touches on sexual politices ("Infamous Date Rape"), violence in hip hop ("Vibes and Stuff"), and the music industry ('Rap Promoter" and "Show Business"). It also features the classic posse cut "Scenario", which is repsonsible for ... Read More:

The first four tracks on Mezzanine are masterpieces, probably the apotheosis of Trip-Hop. Dark, dreamlike, beautiful, stunningly sculpted -- one senses the hundreds, even thousands of studio manhours that went into each song. The rest of the album is brilliant as well, though the "comedown" tracks #5 & #11 might be skipped on repeat listenings. Tracks #6-10 continue the greatness in different directions -- sometimes sly and funny, sometimes crunching rock. Each song has an arc, which takes multiple listenings to understand. This might be sounds repeated at the beginning that are layered upon, then layered upon again, until the whole things unwinds and you are left with the same sounds (the heavy thudding beat in "Angel," the looped feedback in "Dissolved Girl") ... i listened to this everyday when it first came out. it's a fun cd to listen to. his lyrics are crazy, but his beats are on point.
Release Date December 10, 1996
I bought this CD mostly because there are very few 5 star CD's anywhere on Amazon, so I thought this one must be spectacular, right? Wrong. It's a huge disappointment. Especially considering how good everyone makes it out to be. Where are the catchy bass lines or the driving drum beats? There aren't any. He's a DJ, yet you can't dance to any of the songs on this CD. If you played this at a party, or in the car on a crazy night out, you'd make everyone confused.
To give him credit, What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1) and Midnight in a Perfect World are great songs, but just know beforehand that those songs are worlds better than any other on the CD, and even then, they are really slow paced songs. On a CD that has a 5 STAR RATING, you would expect nearly every song ... Read More:

With the late-2003 release of "The Black Album," Jay-Z announced his exit from the rap game and retirement. While we all know that he wouldn't hold true to this promise, "The Black Album" was a dramatic, stunning return to form for one of hip hop's top MCs. Following his 2001 classic The Blueprint, Jay-Z had put out multiple disappointing releases, most notably his follow-upBlueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse, a sprawling double album, and his first R. Kelly collabo Best of Both Worlds. "The Black Album" showed a Jay-Z that we had seen glimpses of on The Blueprint, a dramatic and epic rapper who prophesized, recounted his career, and celebrated his greatness. His boasts are not unfounded in the least, and the album is truly compelling. The production is part of what makes ... Read More:

This is one of the best hip hop albums you will ever hear. Dr. Dre puts his beats in perfect syncronization with the Dogg's lyrics. It is just so smooth. Everyone knows about the high quality of Gin and Juice and Who Am I?, but songs like Tha Shiznit, Gz and Hustlas and Pump Pump are where the album truly shines. It is extremely easy to listen to the whole album all the way through and want to listen to it again and again. A home run for hip hop and music!

I remember when the only Wu Tang albums I owned were; 36 Chambers, Method Man's Tical, and GZA's Liquid Swords, and Beneath The Surface. I was aware of how big their discography is (when combined together is roughly around 45 albums)and was a little intimidated to go far into it. Eventually I had no choice. It got to the point where ALL I listened to were these albums (especially Liquid Swords) and I needed more. When you only own the few that I did, and know you're gonna end up getting most, if not all of their albums (including solo) there's several roads to take to travel further. I was about to get Wu Tang Forever, but decided to bypass, and get Cuban Linx, even though I'd never heard a song off it beforehand. On first listen, it didn't hit as instantly, and directly as ... this is another great album to listen to when you want to chill out or clean the house to. even though she doesn't have the strongest voice, her lyrics and sound bring something new to music.
