The lyrics are sophomoric, the chords are simple, and the overall sound is harmonic. You won't be soul-searching with this band. It's best to listen to when you want to get hyper and that double shot latte isn't doing its job. It's not as raw as traditional punk, which is a good thing for me (I do like trad. punk, but only when I'm in a bitter mood.).
The album is my favorite. They've become more talented at this point, and they haven't started with the pseudo-political stuff. NOFX, stick to songs about drinking, sex, etc. I still love you though.

If someone were to come to me right now and tell me they wanted to get into punk and wanted a list of essential albums to own, this would be one of them. I agree with most people that Milo really made this band with his lyrics and vocals. They were and still are a truly unique and inspiring punk rock band.

Anybody who thinks that punk rock is a lousy genre where the people can't play obviously haven't heard anything like this before (not to mention everything punk influenced). The Refused may be dead as a band, but The Shape of Punk To Come is ALIVE with stunning, well thought out music. If you like punk rock, this is a must. This is why.
First off, as punk rock, it delivers on that front. It's loud, occasionaly fast, always feels like the band going to light a fire under their @$$, you name it. While it's not as intense as Minor Threat, it's not exactly supposed to be. It's potent, as WA mentioned, the vocals are full of venom, anger, and rip anew, it's explosive, it's ________ punk! Full of creatively played riffs, monster drumming, ... Read More:

It seems most 'Fiends' prefer The Misfits Collection I better. I love it too, but I find myself listening to Collection II far more often. Now I have nothing against raw sounds and bad production, my own band has plenty of that, and I admit that the raw, unpolished sound is a large part of the Misfits charm, however, a little production can go a long way.
Collection II has some of my favorite Misfits songs and the entire album sounds better overall than Collection I. 'We are 138', 'Nike a go go', 'Queen Wasp', 'Last Caress', Halloween 1 and 2', and 'Hatebredders' are in my opinion essential songs for a Fiend to have and I believe the best versions of these songs are found right here.
For new Misfits fans and potential Fiends, I highly ... Read More:

Bad Brains-I Against I ****1/2
Released in 1986 after the band broke up, then decided that was a mistake and reformed almost instantly, I Against I is the classic album that really shouldn't be a classic. Of all the amazingly wonderfully brilliant albums that Bad Brains had released, this somehow became the most popular.
The band completely changed their sound and style here, and it wouldn't be the last time. Bad Brains opted out for a more (at the time) modern metal sound with funky over tones and rhythm. Now they do this wonderfully but it doesn't feel right, and for anyone who has heard the bands other albums they know what I am talking about.
The intensity is still here (even though they have slowed down the intensity ... Read More:

I mean that in the truest sense: The Misfits are a greatly misunderstood band and I love that. People who don't know them assume they are a wierdo punk-goth band. They are so much more than that.
The melodies on here are profound. You'll find the songs stuck in your head for weeks. These guys were such pioneers, a decade ahead of their time. The Misfits should have changed their name when Glenn left though...
Favorite tracks: "I Turned into a Martian," "Skulls," "Astro-Zombies," and "London Dungeon."

The Minutemen at their best were pure poetry, propelled by raw power and a funky punk sensibility. Their 1981 release "The Punch Line" is their finest effort.
The band came out of the L.A. punk scene, working class kids chumming around with bands known for blasting noise - crude, loud, and blunt - bands like Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, and Lawndale. But with their ears opened by listening to records by Wire and others, they realized that they needn't fit their music into any genre. And they didn't. The music was loud, and fast, and driving, but often too intricate and much too tight to qualify as hardcore punk.
The lyrics, always spare at first, explored history, politics, and philosophy with remarkable sophistication, and in a way that no other ... Read More:

The Minutemen said it best, but to be more accurate "D4 change my life!" I was fortunate enough to spend my late teens and on submersed in and around the Twin Cities punk scene. And Dillinger Four was as big a part of it as anything else. Not enough can be said about this album, every entry in the D4 catalog can stand on its own, but Midwestern Songs is probably the best "punk" album to come out in a long time (probably the best overall album of the late 90's any genre). Nothing can be beat D4 live, but this album is as close as it comes, and that says a lot.

It was 1974. Political history was being made the day that the Ramones hopped on the stage of the lower east side's CBGB. The rest of the world was watching as Nixon's resignation went into affect, making him the first and only President to resign from office. And at the same time the Ramones were making a different kind of history, making them the first and only "godfathers of punk."
Let's face it: punk music and rock and roll in general would not be the same if it weren't for these four young men dressed in their uniform jeans and leather jackets, singing songs like the ubiquitous "I Wanna Be Sedated" and the mildly offensive "The KKK Took My Baby Away." The Ramones changed music with their experimentation, daring nature, and controversy (i.e., "Bonzo Goes To Bitburg") ... Read More:
