..After about 25 years I've come back around to listen to the Kohln concert. It still matches the visions in my brain. What a wonderful experience -even after Bill Evens...

Recorded in June, 1961 this album set at that time the standard for the piano-bass-drums jazz trio - a standard that has still not been surpassed. It is essential to any collection of jazz, or music for that matter.

I have always loved early Sonny Rollins, until I purchased this CD. Just too much soloing, and not nearly enough of the band.

Anyone who thinks only Bill Evans' early work is his best
hasn't listened to Evans' final album, The Last Waltz,
the 8 disc box set of the 9 night gig he did at the
Keystone Korner in S. F., Sept. 1980, 11 days before his
death. The material on this album is as familiar as the
song titles, (which have so much to do with the bond he'd
established with his listeners), some versions of which he
played 2 or 3 times. The artistry and lyricism are equal to
his best earlier work, and the emotional intensity exceeds it.
although there will never be another Scott LaFaro, bassist,
Marc Johnson and drummer, Joe LaBarbera, make this as good a
Trio as Evans has ever had.

What you get here are two chock-full CDs of the best of Ahmad Jamal's trio output during the late 50s and early 60s. Maybe his absolute best output, period.
Ahmad plays smoothly, melodically, adding quirky interpretations of the melody a little at a time. Sometimes he improvises by subtracting, leaving out notes or lines instead of cluttering things up with lots of notes. Then, out of nowhere will come lightning fast runs or accented notes, struck loud and proud. This is the excitement of the Ahmad Jamal Trio. Melody. Space. Silence. Surprise. Delight!
This collection also contains 3/4 of the classic album Live At The Pershing -- you don't absolutely need that album if you have this one -- the essential stuff is here.

Bill Evans is a musician I can return to again and again. He's the jazz pianist comparable to the classical Debussey. Like Impressionist painters, they fascinate us with variations in light and color. They purr like finely-tuned, 12 cylinder Rolles Royces in neutral. Trouble is they hardly ever put that car in gear.

stan recorded this session with months left to live in a staggering carear of music making . to be joined on these absolutely transcendent tracks by his frequent collaborator and brother in all but birth , kenny barron , is a gift to all with the capacity to appreciate it .

Kenny Barron established a personal landmark as sax player. He was not so sober like Coltrane but in many works, he explored with major amplitude the most diverse ranges of the musical shape, with original sonorities and enraptured mood. And this album with Charlie Haden is a winner.

Yes, Keith Jarrett is a wonder. In this album, as in others, his technical prowess at the piano is amazing. At times, it seems as though there are two, perhaps three, pianists playing simultaneously. The problem here, as in similar solo improvisational albums, is that the technique is an end in itself. There is little beauty, wit, or thoughtfulness. Listening to this often painful album is like watching a world's strongest man contest. Wow, look at those hulks move weights. But what does it prove? And after you've seen it a couple of times, who cares any more? Jarrett is at his best, in my opinion, when facing a score. His The Melody At Night, With You is one of the most gorgeous and sensitive albums I know of. He also plays splendid Bach and Handel. Don't buy the Vienna ... Read More:

I'm 19 years old, and have enjoyed listening, but most of all, playing classical and jazz music whether it be on the flute, electric guitar, or drum practice pad, yet i've realized after purchasing this recording that with 7 years of experience I still can't understand Coltrane's genius...I keep listening to this recording and it all sounds like high school concert band level (not even jazz band) -_-...I find it hard to believe that that's the case, so i've come to the conclusion that i'm still young and lack experience...i feel embarrassed to post this as an up-and-coming musician, but i'm hoping someone can clear this up for me.
