This soundtrack is nothing short of a cultural revival. If it took a wonderful movie and its soundtrack to bring this music back to the forefront and garner the attention it received and deserves, so be it.
What better way could there be to reintroduce such wonderful music? At the moment I can't think of any.
Like many have said before there's not a bad track. This soundtrack is full of surprises and rich nuances that make it a joy to listen to over and over again.
Even if you haven't seen the movie this soundtrack is worth getting.

There are some truly haunting performances here, and some funny ones, and some of everything, really. This stuff is so far deeper and weirder and spookier than any folk I've ever heard. It's the motherlode; Harry Smith wandered around and got these recordings before radio started, and thus we get true folk music, passed down the generations and from that area, or from the motherland of the musicians, with the spirit of the New World.
The vibes are palpable, varied, and intense. Lots of "mistakes", but so much feeling that missed notes only add to the experience.
If you've ever liked any folk music at all, whether Leadbelly, the Seegers, the Carter family, early Dylan, or if you need to know where real country music comes from, this ... Read More:

I've only been listening and going to bluegrass festivals for about 2 years now. I still consider myself new to it. This is a great album to have for anyone interested in bluegrass, especially to those who are newish, as I am. It's a great introduction, and it sounds how bluegrass should sound, in my opinion. I've gotten some bluegrass before that sounds as though it's nothing more than a rock band that happened along a mandolin and a banjo. Thankfully, this album is nothing like that.

I love Appalachian Folk Music and this CD included most of the best. It was true blue original recording of this music.

I love sea chanteys, which is what I thought I'd be hearing. There are some that are done well, but for the most part, this is a sea-related folk album. If you like "I gave my love a cherry," this 60's folk throwback is for you! I'm going in search of some sea chanteys that my sailboat crew can sing to...

Joe Glazer had done quite a few albums devoted to the "American Labor Movement." He wrote and performed a number of the songs assembled here, and you get a real sense of what he was all about.
Paul Robeson kicks the collection off with a fantastic and truly classic rendering of "Joe Hill."
Maybe unintentionally, though, many of the remaining songs testify to the sad state of the labor movement today. Tunes like "VDT" and "Automation" establish, rather than disestablish, that unions today serve virtually no purpose in the face of comprehensive goverment oversight of workplace practices, antidiscrimination laws ("Too Old To Work") and (as something like a general premise) the more enlightened practices of business leaders.
Release Date September 23, 2003
This album is just as good as first two volumes. The artists involved truly have a respect for the originals. If you like this music then I recommend you check out these great collections of folk music by various artists: "O Brother Where Art Thou?" "Ain't No Grave" and "Cold Mountain".

A lot of good music protesting the Vietnam War. I was over there ( 4 tours) when I first heard this album. I liked it then and I still like it today.
