JULY 2008 REVIEW: I purchased this particular box set a little over a month ago, and I must say: it does NOT disappoint. You really can't complain; although the box set was released several years ago, and therefore the early 1990's CD mastering here isn't necessarily as strong and powerful sounding as a 2008 mastering might be, the tracks presented here are bright and clear. Approximately 100 tracks fill out this 4-CD box set, and most of the songs are winners. And they are presented here in their original mono sound mixes as originally released (an apparent problem for some reviewers here, but I had no issue with it; the songs sound the same as they always have). I have been listening to this CD for about a year now, and I cannot believe how great the songs are and how much they remind me of. Better than that, I see things in them that I missed 40-odd years ago. I can listen to these over and over.

The only criticism I have is that the recording quality is somethings lacking. There are light distortions in many of the songs, probably from recording from LPs to a new format. However, it doesn't by any means ruin the listening experience.

Highest recommendation. The compilation is a great deal, all hits, which is better than albums of single artists as many of their tracks were filler.

when singers sing Bacharach they usually know what they are doing or they wouldnt attempt.it most of the people who will write these reviews will never know that the song alfie was played by stevie in the 60s and was a jazz hit.

I essentially agree with the reviewer. Much of the tracks on the CD are great, particularly by the Miracles, the Jackson 5, and the Supremes. But you would be better off getting those tracks off of greatest hits CD's of the particular artists. Most of the modern stuff is fairly forgettable.

Man. Oh man. I don't want to be too harsh on this collection, because these artists are great and so is the music they are covering.

But man. Oh man. Words cannot describe the butchering some of these classics receive. Listen to The Temps destroy "Hey Jude" and you will know what I mean. On second thought, don't. "Imagine" is a timeless classic, except in this cover version by Diana Ross. I hasten to put any version of a Beatles classic in the same category as Captain Kirk's delirious rendition of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," but we are getting close. I won't even mention the Supremes' cover of "Come Together." There goes ol' flat top, indeed.

I love this album. It has so many great songs. I bought this as a cassette back in the 80's and would love to have it in a CD. I haven't been able to find "With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston and Syreeta on any other collection. The only other place I've seen Charlene's "I've Never Been to Me" is on Volume 2 of Ladies of the 80's. They are both super albums and very different in music. I'd recommend both of these albums.
