A very close friend gave me this CD when I was going thru a terrible breakup. I listened to the CD so much I wore it out. But with the help of the CD, my good friend, and the passing of time somehow or another I managed to survive. Fast forward years later, a different yet equally close friend of mine is going thru a divorce and, yes, you guessed it, I'm on Amazon today purchasing the CD for her. I don't know what it is, but this CD is empowering. Makes you cry, makes you angry, makes you want to dance, and makes you dare to dream again. It's a great CD and even better medicine.

Nobody loves the harmonies, melodies and memories that these guys evoke like me...BUT, there is one glaring ommision...'I Gave to You', the Ultimate Slow Jam when I was in Jr. High School, yeah, knit just out of the cleaners, BRUT, 'Fro picked out to the max and that blue light in the basement at Felicia's house (she gave the BEST house parties). That Philly sound is timeless and priceless...

There's a great selection of tunes, but they sound the same as they did on the radio 40 years ago. I fiddled with my stereo's tuners to make sure they were set properly, but couldn't get a crisp, clean sound.

This is definitely one of the greatest soul soundtracks of all time. This cd exemplifies "smooth". Maxwell's smooth remix version of "Sumthin' Sumthin'" is hittin' on all cylinders. I highly recommend this in any real soul fan's collection.

This is the best funky soul music compilation ever!
I read an excellent review in some magazine and
decided it would be a great present for my husband.
I'm not exaggerating: it's probably the best funk/soul compilation ever!
Already the CD box is beautifully designed, lots of great information and trivia and photos.
The songs are very well selected: you go from one track to the other and it's a very mellow swift. Usually other music compilations have just a few good tracks and the other stuff is annoying.
But this is honestly amazing!

JULY 2008 REVIEW: I purchased this particular box set a little over a month ago, and I must say: it does NOT disappoint. You really can't complain; although the box set was released several years ago, and therefore the early 1990's CD mastering here isn't necessarily as strong and powerful sounding as a 2008 mastering might be, the tracks presented here are bright and clear. Approximately 100 tracks fill out this 4-CD box set, and most of the songs are winners. And they are presented here in their original mono sound mixes as originally released (an apparent problem for some reviewers here, but I had no issue with it; the songs sound the same as they always have). When I popped this Cold Heat: Heavy Funk Rarities CD in my stereo, I thought "I bet this will be weak"..I love all kinds of music and 70's funk ranks up there with Joy Division in my book. WOW! was I surprised,this CD blew my head off! These are some of the tightest arrangements I have ever heard in my life... "Drugs Ain't Cool" is by far the best 2:45 funk instrumental I have heard. This entire CD is great.I can't say anymore,except just buy it!
