I first heard this mix only very recently, in a long cab ride, and begged begged the driver to let me buy the disc from him. He refused, but let my friend run into his apartment and upload it into his iTunes. I have since bought the disc, and love it soooo much. It's upbeat, loads of fun, yes, great for cleaning the house to. But really, it brings me back to the days of middle school, going to school dances and buying cassette singles with my friends on the weekends...just being care-free and being a kid. I had been feeling nostalgic for those days lately and this disc captures my youth perfectly!

Ice Cube's soundtrack to accompany the 1995 movie is a well-balanced mix of gangsta rap, g-funk, and cool R&B (some of it old-school soul). Dr. Dre's "Keep Their Heads Ringin'" is an all around fun time classic that got constant rotation in my native Southern Cali in spring of 1995. The beat is some sick deep-groove funk produced by Sam Sneed, a sick g-funk producer from Pittsburgh, Pa. Ice Cube'e "Friday" is a classic house party joint with a flamboyant lowrider beat. We also get Rick James 1978 classic, the laidback and soulful weed ode, "Mary Jane," a song sampled 1000 times (or more) for rap joints. Groups like this may at one time have been a dime a dozen (JBs/Archie Bell/Jr. Walker/Fatback Band type copy funk acts with slick rhythm guitar, punchy horns, funky fatback drums and very big afros I'm sure) but now they ain't a dime a dozen - - and odds are you've never heard most the stuff on this album. I suspect a lot of these groups may have had a hit or two on their (very) local scenes,then faded into obscurity... before doing so, collectively they did make magic... The KICKER on the album definitey has to be the LAST POETS-ish ultra jivey "jump rope" type rhyme "But What About You" thang... This is an album that gets a few spins on the regular but there is too many tracks I don't even bother listening to. Some are either just bad or I don't care for the artist. The opening track by Spice 1 N*gga gots no Heart is one of the best on here. The best track is MC Eiht's Straight up menace. This track was perfect for the soundtrack. I can visualize the events in the movie the way Eiht lays it down. The beat is perfect as well. Spice 1 also drops the clean version of the same track A Trigga gots no Heart. Pete Rock and CL Smooth deliver a pretty hard track "Death Becomes You". KRS makes an appearance with P is still free. If you're a fan of hip-hop you can't sleep on Ruff Ryders' mark on the game and the greatness of this album, it dropped in 1999 and still sounds timeless today, this is when DMX, Eve, Drag-On, and The Lox were at there best, I'm sure most hip-hop heads own this album already but if you don't have it you should check it out 'cause it's better than most crap out these days people consider hot.

Boyz N The Hood: Music From The Motion Picture

Much like New Jack City and Higher Learning, Boyz N The Hood was ahead of its time. I say this about both the film and the soundtrack.

The soundtrack, of course, had your share of rap by Ice Cube (How To Survive In South Central), Main Source (Friendly Game Of Baseball), Monie Love (Work It Out) and 2 Live Crew (Hanging Out). It also had some beautiful instrumentals from Stanley Clarke and Quincy Jones. It had an R & B classic from Tony, Toni, Tone with "Just Me And You" and an underrated song called "Spirit" with a very on-point message.

Others have come along that have tried to duplicate this and the other two films/soundtracks I've named (think Poetic Justice, Menace II Society and Baby Boy) but only a few have even come close (think Set ... Read More:

I can't believe I found this! I used to love this album, it's the best soundtrack I've ever heard and the collaborations are beautiful. You will enjoy, the movie is just as good.

Tales From The Hood: The Soundtrack

I forgot how good this CD is. There are a lot of rappers on here, mostly West Coast.
Can't really pick any stand out tracks, cuz the whole damn CD is good.

I recommend this one for fans of gangsta rap, with a creepy, eerie Halloween type of feel.

This is a timeless classic funk with a mix of different artists For those to young to remember this is what current rap music evolved from. there are so many remakes in most music genres that most people don't know what originals sounded like. this is a great sampling R&B funk hits of the late 70's early 80's.
