I collect instrumental surf CDs and have a very broad context within which to place the songs on this disk. The two songs by the Coffin Daggers are expressive, energetic, ironically humorous, beautifully played, and lovely sounding. They are thick with gorgeous guitar distortion. The rest of the songs are not in the same league, and sound like simplistic garage rock. It makes more sense to get a Coffin Daggers CD. Even the Volcanos (whose own two CDs are sparkling and exciting) sound boring here in a rip-off of the old standard "Church Key" they call "Bad News." Seriously, its an amazing CD. Some ingenious covers that manage to turn a so-so Jam song into pure brilliance. Buffalo Tom's cover of "Going Underground" and Noel Galagher's take on "To Be Someone" are good enough to justify buying this CD just for those two tracks. Though every track is at least enjoyable, if its not brilliant. If you like the Jam then theres no doubt that you'll love this CD.

there are a couple of passable covers on this, but the point escapes me. if someone wants to gain exposure to elliott's music, buy either/or and go from there. new moon (primarily outtakes/extras from that session) is also a good introduction. the icing on the cake for this tribute is the cover of thirteen, which is a big star song. aside from being a cover of a cover, this version is truly awful.

I love this cd and i only bought it for 99 cents at hastings! I could listen to a couple of songs i liked here and there on the lilith cds,k but this really made women's music strong enough to make me want to listen to the whole cd. I highly recommend it.

There's a song change on my copy of "On the Edge." Song #10 is a different Pretenders song, it's "I'll Stand by You" instead of "Don't Get Me Wrong."

I've been a Jonathan fan for a long time and it's really great to hear a compilation like this. Lots of energy and humor, and very true to the spirit of Jonathan. It mostly focuses on his early ('70s) songs, but there are a couple versions of his more recent tunes, too. I'm hooked. If you want to hear classic Jonathan Richman songs done the way Jonathan might do them now, get this CD!
