this is the tightrope. this is walking the line.

after 8 albums and a live release, the roots have been through all the record label crap any band could face. start as an independent, get major label love, fall into major label neglect, jump ship to a new label, get more neglect. the roots could be forgiven if this album had been a bitter screed against any and all record labels, such is the extent of their being screwed around.

instead, they manage to keep their wits about them and throw in their usual political and social commentary. this is still a dense, murky album, but it's not insular or isolating. the roots have always been dark, and here they pull the covers over the listener and play their songs through ... I listen to this album practically everyday, I like all the songs on the albums for various reasons. The cd is a plethora of reggae/dancehall hits to soulful R&B love ballads. Usually, especially nowadays, more attention is put into the production of the track rather than the lyrics but careful attention has been paid to both on this album. One can tell that Estelle is singing from the heart about tricky relationship situations, obtaining self-confidence, and how to fight through life's struggles. Each song is infused with a message, even if it's a playful one (i.e. on "American Boy" "..don't like his baggy jeans but I might like what's underneath them") I really dig this album and wish her all the success. Robyn's 1st American release, "Robyn Is Here" was not a musical revelation, but her voice was very well-showcased. The songs were melodic, allowing her to begin adding very well executed embelishments on the later verses in each song. The music wasn't overtly intricate, but it was enjoyable over repeated listening because of her excellent vocal individuality and personally sung background vocal arrangements.

This new album is not about Robyn at all, because she is so hidden behind all of the NOISES (not music) that box in her voice. Instead of giving us more true songs to enjoy, we now get 3 verses of rap (which isn't very inspired or ground-breaking), and then we get a chorus that is actually sung in her voice. So which is it? When I hopped back in my car and popped the CD in after a purchase from Best Buy. I heard the intro, quickly I scanned 30 seconds through every song. Then without hesitation, I tossed the CD itself out the window and kept the album case. Sorry girls, If I only knew I would've just bought your first album again.
