CD-Charts > Music > Baroque (c.1600-1750)
from: SONY CLASSICS
Release Date September 02, 2008
How a Bloomington, Indiana musician successfully managed to interpret a baroque masterpiece by Italian Composer Vivaldi is amazing. Partly because Bell uses a Violin better known to the Baroque era; The Stradivarious. Thanks also go to London's acclaimed "Academy of St. Martin in The Fields", (a chamber orchestra specializing in Baroque era music) of which Bell felt very comfortable playing with. Most of all Joshua Bell is not only a great musician, but a hard working determined student of the baroque era. He puts his stamp on one of the most interpreted musical pieces of all time. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

This is a beautiful recording, Simone Dinnerstein's renderings of the Bach French Suite and the Opus 111 of Beethoven are altogether perfect, with fine musical judgment and finesse. To point out just one track, the Gavotte of the French Suite was delightfully cheery, remaining adult while fleetly avoiding the trap of "cuteness". My only doubt in pre-ordering this CD was whether the contemporary Variations by Philip Lasser would stand up in such august company. I'm glad to report that the Lasser made me happy; it is musical and skillful in its echoes of Bach and impressionism both. I am pleased to have this recording join Dinnerstein's Goldberg Variations on my music shelf.

In the August 2008 BBC Music Magazine, George Hall gave this disc four out of five stars. He didn't like some of Lorraine's fast passage work and found that conductor Craig Smith lacked impetus. Hmm. Not me. These are magically relaxed performances where soloist and chamber orchestra are almost literally singing to and with each other. There's something special going on here. And Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sounds completely in control of what she's doing. I don't think you'll be disappointed. If only there had been more.

Release Date January 01, 2006
The CDs in this set are not packaged in standard jewelboxes nor even in cheap sleeves, but are mounted directly atop a printed surface. As a result, when I purchased the set from my school bookstore, I found that several of the CDs had dried flecks of ink on the data side that made it impossible to play or rip certain tracks. Beware.

Bach: Goldberg Variations. If you've ever questioned the value of owning different interpretations of the same musical work, just listen to this interpretations and compare it to that of Gould, or Landowsa, or anyone else. The artist, of course, makes a great difference. And this artist is one of the greats. Among the great interpretations of this work I find that hers resonates with me personally. This is intimate and sensitive. A Bach keyboard piece sounding romantic? That's how this interpretation strikes me. Whatever the details, it has affected the several people I have shared it with, and all agree that it is exceptional. You will think so too.

We bought this to use in the church nursery. It is entertaining and yet calming to listen to. Short review, but definitely worth the $4!
Release Date June 06, 2006
Not exactly sure what I would do without these recordings. A world without Bach: a scary thought. My pulse slackens a bit each time I put these on. Relaxing, sure, but also tremendously moving. A perfect antidote for the trivial drone, distraction, and bustle of our post-capitalist world. No need to go buy new-age computer glitch world-music ambience; this is sonic therapy, written centuries before we needed it.

I was very pleased with this collection. It is simply just beautiful classical music that hasn't been dumbed down for babies, like so many other albums seem to be. It also does NOT have any 'new age' like adaptions, which was a big plus for me personally. My daughter has not had any problems drifting to sleep while it's playing. I would definitely recommend this as a great first CD for your baby!
