The CDs in this set are not packaged in standard jewelboxes nor even in cheap sleeves, but are mounted directly atop a printed surface. As a result, when I purchased the set from my school bookstore, I found that several of the CDs had dried flecks of ink on the data side that made it impossible to play or rip certain tracks. Beware.

Vladimir Horowitz is one of the greatest pianists to ever live. For pianists who embrace things pianistic in the repertoire, he is immortal. For those whose credo is different, he often is still a huge force to be reckoned with. Therefore, listening to his last public performance is an act practically required of a musician who finds it important to follow this fascinating career and life completely to the end. Horowitz's musical ideas, his inspirations, and the tone he brings from the piano are present, full-force, in this recital, and much of his playing is less mannered and more to-the-point than his other renditions of these same works. In addition to that, he is more tired, weaker, stiffer, and less accurate than other late performances ... Read More:

I thoroughly enjoy these CDs. I tried collecting Mozart in portions over time, but his repertoire is just way too large to manage for amateurs like me. It is well worth buying the whole collection in one purchase.

Yet another great recording from Murray Perahia and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields! This recording has really helped me in preparing to perform one of the Mendelssohn concertos myself; great sound quality on the actual recording as well as the superb technique exhibited makes this album one of my favorites!

I was fortunate enough to find this collection used for only 20 bucks, and I would easily pay more for it. This set contains the albums Horowitz at Home, Horowitz in Moscow, Horowitz plays Mozart, The Last Romantic, Horowitz the Poet, and the 1985 studio recordings. All of the music is superb and you will see it frequently released in Horowitz compilation cds. I highly recommend this collection for any Horowitz lover or as a collection to get into Horowitz.

Gyorgy Sandor, whom I remember seeing in the halls of the University of Michigan School of music many years back, does an amazing job at recording all the Bartok piano pieces. It's really incredible when an artist is able to achieve this kind of scope and do this much work. Of course, having a good teaching job at Michigan and other places and his renown helped a lot, I am sure. In any case, I expected a couple of CDs in this box, but not FIVE of them! Bartok also, obviously, had the highest of aspirations. It's hard to get a grip on this, since each is over 70 minutes long so we're talking about 6 hours of music here. I've been purchasing almost all the sheet music as well to go with these. No better way to study the great composer.

The sound quality is so poor in this recording that it is difficult at best to enjoy. I suppose if you play your music at extremely low volume, or are used to listening on a poor quality stereo (think victrola sound), then maybe you could get past the static noise. Quite a shame, considering what a masterfully performed, complete set this makes.
Release Date April 11, 2000
The producer of this recording, Martha de Francisco, made a bad decision by including the applause after the live portions of the recording. It really spoils the peaceful mood generated by listening to this delightfully played music. Did she think that they had to "prove" that it was live? Did she think that the obnoxious clapping would "trick" the listeners into thinking that they were sitted on hardbacked chairs in an auditorium?
Nevertheless, Brendel doesn't let us down and delivers 69:55 minutes of perfectly executed Mozart.
